My family does the sauerkraut and pork tradition that was, I believe, started with the PA Dutch. We call it Big Pork Day™️, and it’s the best day of the year!
We also grab pots and pans and wooden spoons and run outside at midnight to make noise. Our menu is appetizers all night and we drink whatever out of champagne flutes.
I think there’s a tradition about doing laundry but I can’t remember if it’s NYE or New Year’s Day.
We are not pork and kraut fans, so we always do crab legs and other seafood on NYD. My parents always did this on NYE, but since we often go out with friends we carried that tradition over on NYD instead.
There's not really anything else specific we do. Champagne, of course!
I think the laundry thing is to not do any laundry on NYD (or you may "wash a loved one away"), so I'm doing all mine today lol.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

My ILs do lobster dinner on NYD. However, due to economic constraints and the family getting bigger, we are now doing lobster tails and steak tomorrow. That’s fine by me.
Tonight is heavy apps, although we need to kill off some leftover French bread and the bag of onions my Mom left behind so we are going to make French onion soup for the adults. With sparkling wine of course.
We usually host an appetizer based party with friends but most said they couldn’t come out this year so we didn’t bother. Makes me kind of sad, but at the same time it’s nice because I don’t have to spend all day cleaning the house and prepping food.

We don’t celebrate NYD. tonight we’ll do heavy apps and my brother and his fiancé are coming, as is my mom. We plan to play cards against humanity and hopefully stay up until midnight.
NYE: Sushi for dinner, nacho platter for late night snack, watch a couple of movies, chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, etc and sparkling wine while we watch the ball drop.
NYD: No real traditions. Eat the rest of the nacho platter.
We’ve done a theme movie marathon for like 16 years now. Movies, music, food, games around a theme. Sometimes it’s one night but over the years it’s morphed into a weekend. It’s fun! Some planning involved but it’s pretty low key and flexible.

My tradition used to be going to a pasta dinner at my aunt’s house where my cousins and I, all of whom were hung over to the point of feeling death’s grip on our throats, would try not to vomit on our older relatives.
The last few years we’ve been down the shore with my parents.
This year, of the ten of us (parents, sister, BIL, H, me, and four kids between us), eight of us have COVID, so that’s not working out. Lol

Another vote for pork and sauerkraut over here! Always my favorite dinner just because it's delicious, also because it was just my mom, aunt and uncle, gram and sister if she still in town (she usually flew out for NYE, lol). I liked that it was smaller and more intimate after Xmas was so crazy.
We also do a new year's pretzel - which might also be PA Dutch/German? Pittsburgh always had them at bakeries and grocery stores, and I have been lucky to find a bakery here in Buffalo that also does them :-)
For NYE, we typically do lots of small appetizers and lots of bubbly. I watch the ball drop and DH usually falls asleep early, lol.
This year, because of the crazy blizzard/snowstorm, we lost power and heat over Xmas so we're combining all the holidays into today and tomorrow, lol. So things are a little different this year, but I still got the pretzel and we'll do the pork and sauerkraut tomorrow!

We so 12 grapes at midnight, one with each dong of the clock. It’s a Spanish tradition. We always watch the youtube video from it earlier in Madrid - bonus of being hours behind them.
The past several years I've been doing "Junk Food and Movie Night" with the big kid. Which has evolved to junk food all day, the only restriction is that she can't make herself sick. This year Little Kid is old enough to let her indulge. The biggest tradition is making homemade soft pretzels. I'm about to go start them now.
I've spent NYE in Hanoi, Prague, Paris, London and Rio de Janeiro. Now my only tradition is to fall asleep before midnight. We might try to watch the countdown on CBC Newfoundland this year (at 7:30pm our time haha). I think by the time NYE rolls around, I'm just tired of making magic and party fun and rich foods.
The only thing we ever do every new year every year without fail is cook collard greens and black eyed peas. The protein changes (this year it's ham but last year it was fish), but the collards remain the same. I love me some good greens so I'm looking forward to it ☺️
The only other "tradition" we have is cleaning. But I think that's more my wants/needs than tradition lol.
NYD I do a variation of Hoppin John where I make a soup with collards (the pot liquor being the broth of the soup), ham, & black eyed peas. Serve with corn bread. It’s so good (and healthy!).
It has varied so much for us. Most of the first several years of our relationship we went out, but at least half of those ended up being more expensive and more of a hassle than they were worth. We're on the 3rd NYE home on our own this year. We usually do heavy apps and a movie or two. I don't really consider that a tradition as much as a lack of creativity, lol.

No NYE or NYD traditions here unless staying home and off the roads with the crazy drivers counts. If I grab a bite to eat out, I'm home before 8 pm. Today I have leftover Thai, so I don't even need to do that!

It’s just me and two kids. We do a nice dinner at about 10p and then turn on one of the NYE show and play card games until close to midnight. Watch the ball drop and bang pots and pans - including opening the door and letting the evil spirits out. No laundry NYD but it gets all gathered up for 1/2.
Nothing special on NYD but tonight we will watch a movie, then watch some of the countdown shows depending on who's performing, and then we'll close out the night with all of us sleeping under the Christmas tree and lights.
