We made a bunch of appies, played card games, chatted with family in different time zones. DS loves watching the celebration in St. John’s at 7:30 and Halifax at 8:00, then we put him to bed. We’re going sledding in a bit then super lazy the rest of the day.
My son finally got his wish to stay up until midnight so it was 1 before he was in bed and we were up even later. I feel like garbage today! My husband invented The New Year's Day Rocky Marathon so that's on.
There is way too much food happening here. I had a spiral ham in our freezer so I took it out to make today. We made so many apps last night we have leftovers so I wish I hadn't taken it out! When organizing the chest freezrler yesterday I found a ham bone that I had stashed so I have pea soup simmering now and I'll use the next one to make black bean soup. We have a big container of ricotta cheese that's nearing expiration so my husband is making baked ziti tomorrow. Everything will freeze well and come in handy for precooked meals later, but a spiral ham and tray of baked ziti for 3 people over 2 days feels excessive.
We watched Top Gun Maverick last night. Yeah, we are late, but OMG. So many Gen-X tears. I might watch it again today since we did the Amazon rental.
I also made a cippino with just muscles and shrimp. And today I’m making my first sourdough. Who would have thought I’d turn into someone who likes cooking fancy stuff.
I talked H into a dry January (me soda, him alcohol). He agreed he wouldn’t by any more, but would finish what he had. And… well… he tried last night. So he is in bed nursing a hangover.
My son and I saw it in the theater and loved it so much. We couldn't wait for the DVD to come out so we could watch it again with DH. We did a double feature and with the first one. It was just as good the 2nd time and it was great to see them together.
jinkies doors are so tricky. I hope it isn't a complete disaster!!
Very low key yesterday, and even more low key today if that’s possible. I’m making bean and ham soup in the crockpot (using leftover ham and ham-bone from T-giving) and we’re christening the charcuterie board my MIL gave us with some very meh Hillshire Farm that H got from one of his students.

I really want to watch the first one again now. But I’m too cheap to spent my Amazon digital credits 😂
Me: [asks simple yes or no question] H: [over explaining with a little attitude but doesn’t answer the question.] Me: “I just needed a yes or no” H: “I am walking you through it.”
Happy and healthy New Year everyone!
Oh, hi, you’ve met my H, I see 😆 it’s so irritating when he does this. And his “I’m just walking you through it” is said with such a mansplaining attitude. I’m sorry that you have to deal with this today!
I’m exhausted today. I didn’t even drink that much last night. I think I’ve completed the transition into someone who genuinely doesn’t enjoy drinking anymore. I’m kind of grappling with exactly what that is. I def don’t want to be making any proclamations like “I don’t drink” but I kind of wish I could? I think it would be kind of cool to be alcohol free but I would like the choice every now and then? It’s a totally stupid thing to be pondering and it only matters to me (no one cares in my social circle) but I am the queen of overthinking things.
I stopped drinking when I was pregnant with my almost 13 year old. Once I felt comfortable drinking again, it made me feel awful.
I am not supposed to drink due to medications I’m on to manage an autoimmune disease (they’re hard on your liver). Every once in awhile I’ll have a cocktail but mostly I’m happy to just not drink.
It’s not a big deal in my social circle at all. Nobody has ever commented on it actually. The only comments I’ve gotten is when I went on a girls weekend to Napa for a friend’s 30th birthday. They all kept saying, “but can’t you just have one glass?” It was the only time I felt uncomfortable about it. It was all her friends, I didn’t know any of them before the trip.

For my H, it’s usually something like:
Me: What time did you want to run to Costco? Him: Well it’s 10 now. Me: Yes, what time do you want to leave? Him: It takes about 30 minutes to get there. Me: So leave in about twenty minutes? Him: Let’s see, that would put us there at…. Me: Walks away
This made me laugh, which made DH look at me quizzically, so I read it to him. He then sighed and said “sorry,” I think on behalf of all men everywhere. Lol

I appreciate it. 😄
My husband is very much acts of service over words, so this is his way of apologizing. But I'm still annoyed.

We rang in the new year solving the murder mystery game Murder at the Motel. At 12:01 - I realized if was the new year and we took a break to do wordl together. We had a really good time, we were up until 1:30a. We are such nerds. We barely drank and I slept in until 9:30a.
Today I’m going to take down Christmas decorations and we will clean our house. Tomorrow we are going to stay in a tiny house for two days up in a place where sometimes it snows. It looks like it’ll rain but I’m hoping it’ll cool down enough for kids to see some snow falling.

We started the celebrating at our friend’s house around 4:30 and came home around 10. We would have stayed longer but DD was tired and melting down. She wanted to stay there of course but she was a hot mess and with 12 other kids around it was a recipe for disaster! Had a lot of food, drinks and laughs before that though. I left her come into bed with me and try to stay awake for midnight but we both fell asleep with the TV on.
Today, H took her and the dog to the dog park while I took everything off the tree. The inside of the house is fully de-Christmased now. I’m looking forward to returning to our regular family routines on Tuesday! Get this kid back to school!

I’m tired today. We stayed up until just past midnight, and I slept until 10. Soooo not ready for reality tomorrow, it’s always a bummer to have to restart real life right on Jan 2 (and only 1 of my 3 kids has school tomorrow, making it even worse).
This made me laugh, which made DH look at me quizzically, so I read it to him. He then sighed and said “sorry,” I think on behalf of all men everywhere. Lol

You deserve to be, but I'm glad he's at least being nicer now.

We had a good run, but I’m irritated with H this afternoon. He bought me a bunch of random snacks for my Christmas stocking. I went to eat one and he was like, do you really think that’s a good idea before you go to your nail appointment? It makes your breath smell terrible.
First, I had plans to brush my teeth after eating it. Second, why would you buy me snacks that you think ruin my breath? Third, I’m wearing a mask so I’m the only one who would be dealing with it. But mostly, just why would say that to grown adult?!
So then I tossed it back on the counter and grabbed my purse to leave and he was like, “jeez don’t take it personally. Why do you always act like this when I’m just trying to help you?”
Anyway I left in a huff and now I’m annoyed and hungry and not enjoying my appointment.
I just had the weirdest exchange with my former neighbor. For context, she has 2 kids in their mid-late 20s, and previously told me that one is getting married this year, the other is in a long term relationship, and she also mentioned she has several big vacations coming up.
So she sends me a happy new year message, and I write back "same to you, sounds like you have a lot of excitement coming up this year."
She responds "yes, so many weddings and the baby is coming."
This is the first I heard about the baby, it would be her first grandkid so I tell her congratulations, I didn't know there was a baby, very exciting.
She ghosts me for like 5 hours, then finally replies "it's a friend of my daughter having the baby."
I just... Wut??? I haven't talked to you in a year, you have two kids in long term relationships at prime child bearing age. WHY would you drop "the baby" in a casual update on your life if it's not related to you??? LOL.
This then led to over sharing about her daughter's gynecological issues, which I'm sure her daughter would be thrilled to know her mother is telling all her acquaintances.
I’m tackling some decluttering. Starting with paper clutter which I hate. I went through the 2 drawer filing cabinet that I’ve moved to 2 houses without going through it.
I’m also going to go through my desk so I can get rid of it and make the office a workout room for SS.
We, too watched Top Gun Maverick last night and really enjoyed it. We don’t watch a lot of movies, and certainly not big blockbuster movies, so it was nice to watch it together and enjoy it.
We all lasted until midnight. DS & DH stayed up talking until almost 2:00. No one was up before 10. We’re watching the Chiefs and then I must do something productive. No one goes back to school or work until Thursday, but I’m already dreading trying to get DS up and out the door as he’s completely off any sort of routine.
We also saw Maverick yesterday, and loved it. Now I have to see the 1st one!
I'm on my phone, so can someone please post the "get out" gif? How have you not seen Top Gun?!
Today is MIL's birthday, so we had family lunch over there and a very chill day. Last night my dad and stepmom came over for dinner, which was relaxed and delicious, and at about 11:15 we decreed it midnight, toasted with some champagne, and they went back to their Airbnb. FI and I stayed up until midnight expecting it to be loud enough to wake L up, but it was weirdly quiet everywhere in the city, which was a very nice change from previous years of not being able to sleep from the noise of other people's parties!

Ok, day has turned around. My mom got my daughter, my niece, my nephew and I roller skates for Christmas. I convinced my niece to put on her big Bambi eyes and ask her Nana if we could back the cars out of the garage and make a skating rink in it. She said yes, and I looked up a 90s skating rink playlist on YouTube. We skated in circles for so long. It was so fun!
We had to come in for lunch and the kids were begging me to go out and skate some more. Definitely made my heart happy.
Unforunately I was awake for the day at 5:30am. Thankfully DS(6.5) slept until 7ish and H was up at 9am. It's been a mostly normal Sunday for us. My oldest sister and grandma came for lunch and that was nice. We have plans to take down the tree at some point today. I'll do some math and reading with DS soon.
