2. Holds are strict—it was 3 days pre-COVID and now it is one week. I get in trouble sometimes and it makes me grumpy.
3 days sounds so short! Ours is a week but in practice, really six days and that doesn’t seem long enough. I guess at least they made it a week for you!
Oh yeah our holds are 5 days for pickup. I would hate it if were two weeks! It could just be sitting there, unread, while people are waiting in line for it.

I wonder if it is 10 days for all books or just books without other holds?

it's my library that does this, and I'm annoyed now too! I got Demon Copperhead which is a "hot item" so I only get it for 7 days. But I got a notification about it being available like last Thursday or so, and the pickup date was sometime next week, it was in the double digits of January. I'd rather a shorter pickup time then a short checkout time. I doubt I can finish it in 7 days so I don't know if it's worth starting.
I was curious because my library really sticks to the exact dates and never gives any extra time to the library being unexpectedly closed or a holiday. They were closed 4 days in a row at Christmas which halved the time you had to pick up a book (a week but really 6 days since they are closed Sundays). They are very quick to send the books back even if there are no other reserves on it.
This has always seem strange to me and does seem to be unusual in general judging from the responses here.
Years ago I had a very circular conversation with a staff member who insisted that “pick up by X date” meant it got sent back on X date because you were supposed to have picked up “by” then. That was finally resolved but odd!

That’s weird too! We have 7 day “hot items” but they can’t be put on request. There are other copies of the same book that can be requested that give you the usual 3 weeks
