I hope you aren't in FL. The average (AVERAGE) price for a 16yo male driver is $584 a month. A MONTH.
We aren't there yet, but our auto insurance just went up (again) for absolutely no reason other than the people around us are shitty drivers and the state doesn't give a flying shit about consumers.
My son just got his license a week ago and increased $230 a month as a part time driver on our 2 cars which have full coverage and I upped my deductible to 1,000 (was $500). We have Safeco. Nationwide was a bit cheaper but we bundle purchased renter insurance so we get a discount on that and their renters at nationwide was double.
I have Allstate and live in PA. We currently pay about $220/mth for full coverage with high limits and low deductible. My daughter will be taking drivers edge and my agent advised that our premium will go up a little over $100/mth when DD gets her license in June.

The reason IMO is all these contingency attorneys convincing people that they will be millionaires when they sue insurance companies. Morgan and Morgan, I’m looking at you and your ridiculous billboard ads that include the overweight figure head lounging in a pool with a photoshopped 6 pack.

This makes me glad my 16 yo ds has no interest in driving! He did get his permit, but hasn't driven any of the hours required to take the actual driving test.
It’s going to be extremely dependent on individual and location factors. The rate you get with even the same company wouldn’t be the same as someone else’s. I recommend an independent agent to shop you around. Also some carriers offer teen training, like teen smart, that reduces rate. Good luck!
I was able to transfer my accident-free policy to my son (that had been under my name since the late 80s) . He then got the benefits of my policy, which lowered his insurance rate. He also got the good grades and safe driver (or whatever it's called) discounts. It still wasn't cheap, but much better than it would have been if he didn't have those discounts applied. I don't recall how much it actually went up (it's been 12 yrs). I believe his premium went down a little each year until he hit 25.
I’m in Michigan and it was shockingly not bad. We were with Meemic but shopped around and found better prices through Progressive. My oldest is 22 and younger son is 19. DS1 is still on my plan but pays us for his share every 6 months. His own policy would be super expensive due to lack of credit history and his age, and I see no point in doing that to him until he buys new or gets married. So, 4 vehicles, 4 drivers, 2 full coverage and 2 no fault only and our 6 month premium was $1100 every 6 months. Then H got a new (very expensive) truck for hauling equipment and it went up to $2,000. We have not bundled our house with Progressive, which we are regularly told would save us more, so that is something to look at if you aren’t already. We aren’t willing to risk that. We have a German Shepard which can be an issue for some companies and we burn wood in the winter which some companies simply won’t allow. So it could, maybe be less if you bundle but we aren’t willing to rock the boat and never found out the difference.
Both kids received discounts for having B averages. And we also get the “safe driver” discount which actually means no claims discount. H hit a deer (in our area this is not at all unusual) and our rates would have skyrocketed if we lost that discount. Paid out of pocket for that one. Someone backed into me in a parking lot and that too we will pay out of pocket due to the estimated increase. Neither accident is a reflection on driving, so safe driver is just a cute title. 🤷♀️
So we had 3 cars prior to adding DD17 - once we put her on, it was an additional $650 yearly or so in MA. I was honestly shocked at how little it was. Our cars are a 2013 suburban, 2017 volt, 2017 bmw 3 - so they aren't super new or expensive cars. We go through Hanover insurance.

So my son isn't the only one? I don't get it! He has his permit and is in drivers ed, but has almost zero interest in driving. I couldn't wait to get my license when I was a teen.
My insurance didn't go up at all when I added him, but I think it's because he only has a permit. I'm not looking forward to the rates after, I'm guessing they are going to increase by at least $300/month.
esdreturns, my ds has had his permit for over a year. He just turned 16 in Jan. They have to drive at least 60 hours here in NC to take the driving test. He has not recorded any time. To be fair, drivers here are totally crazy and I don't even want to drive! We did not hae to add him to insurance for the permit.
We added my SD to our insurance when she turned 16 and it ended up being over $1200/year more. So a lot, but not as bad as some of the rates quoted here.
Make sure to ask about good student discounts if your kid is a good student, etc.
He pays 200 a month. We switched to pay by the mile with Allstate, which works as long as I'm mostly working from home. He drives maybe 20 miles a day so his portion is probably not 200 every month, but based on what other 17-year-old boys were paying, we decided that seemed fair. We do have some long trips in there, but there's a 200 mile cap/day and it seems to be working out. I'm going to reevaluate in the spring when he's been driving for a year, his rate should go down some. He's going to take a car to college next year, I think, and probably drive even less, except for the trips home.
My DD1 got her license in July. I added her to our insurance with Allstate. The increase was $230/month.
A few months later I called an insurance broker that a friend recommended who did all the leg work for me and found that Progressive would only be $90/month to have her on the policy and we get slightly better coverage. Apparently Progressive is known to be more new driver friendly. We moved car insurance to Progressive and left everything else with Allstate. Then a month later Allstate starts blowing up my email with hey we actually can get you a better deal!!! And they offered me about the same price as Progressive. Too late! They said it had something to do with credit scores or something, but our credit scores are both over 800 and have been for over a decade so I call BS.
My suggestion would be to find an insurance broker to do all the leg work and then present you with the options from all the companies.
DS didn't get his license until he was almost 21, so we never got hit with 16 year-old-boy pricing. My friends who did, shopped their policies and asked about discounts. Some of them got discounts for being honor students, for having taken a drivers ed course and /or having a device that tracked driving habits. DS initially got a discount related to drivers ed and being a college student.

It might be a chicken/egg thing. If there weren't so many shitty drivers- would there be so many lawyers?

A lot of these claims are from low impact accidents where there’s little (like under $2k) damage to the car but apparently tremendous damage to the person. Obviously not all. There are some real injury cases where the insurance needs to pay out but the that hasn’t been the majority from my experience.

We have Farmers and pay a LOT! But we just got a quote from USAA for 50% of what we pay now - so will be making the move once I have the time to spend an hour on the phone with them.
Also in Michigan and are with progressive. We’ve shopped around a number of times, and we have home and auto separated which strangely gets us the best deal.
Just added my oldest to our auto policy (she just passed her written exam tonight, and will get her permit later this month, omg) and I honestly don’t remember what it added to the total cost. But I’m not shopping around any more, because I can’t imagine that the best rate we found with progressive would *improve* with a teenage driver via another company.

Ours is so expensive. We have progressive and I’m insuring my 23 yo who is considered a male I guess. Who doesn’t have a perfect driving record.
They were paying their portion of insurance but In july got a newer car and it’s more expensive and they’ve been having trouble keeping up with the car payment and insurance. I initially gave some grace (because they had to buy a car before they were really ready), but it’s been a few months and your coverage with me is FAR less than it would be on its own.
So pay up.
I’ll add my 17 yo shortly once she gets her license (sometime this month).
She will pay her portion of the premium as well, and I agreed to pay for her gas.
I’m in CA and they can no longer charge more for male teen v female teen. DS has his own car (old hand me down). So we are three cars, three drivers. Our insurance went up $170 a month. I was told it goes down when he’s had his license a year with no accidents.
