I agree to call and explain. At least if you are paying September now, it shouldn't be more than 30 days past when August was due. You might end up having to pay a late fee, but it shouldn't go on your credit.
I did this with our mortgage. I updated auto pay for the month versus recurring when the payment increased for the year (ARM). Thankfully I got the letter in the mail and actually opened it in time to get the extra $20 sent.
If I've missed a payment I've always gotten the fee and credit mark taken off by calling.
Ugh, I did this with our home depot credit card. Wrote it in my register as paid, checked it off on my excel spreadsheet and then couldn't figure out why I had an extra 200 floating in my bank account.
Luckily I found it three days after the actual due date, I called they waived the fee as I've never been late and said it shouldn't effect my credit any.
I did something similar with my Verizon bill. I finally set it up on autopay but didn't know that it wouldnt' take it out until the next month so I didn't pay that month's bill. First time I've ever been late on a bill haha. I just called and explained and they easily waived the late fee.
