I tried to search - so sorry if this is a duplicate. I'm finally getting my new couch tomorrow. I waited on a new LR rug until it's in to be sure it coordinates, etc... and still have to get everything else - coffee table, accent chairs, side tables, curtains, etc.... BUT - I saw some rugs I really like at Home Goods for $200 - $300. and have also been looking at ruggables. Do you have one - do they hold up? do they fit in your washing machine? etc...?
We have 2 dogs and the LR is also the entrance from the back yard/patio. so there will be some traffic through there - although the rug will not be right at the door.
I have two Ruggables, a 9x12 in my dining room, and a smaller one, I think 5x7, in my DD's room. I have washed the 5x7 at home, but it totally maxed out my machine, and I had to run a couple dryer cycles. If I have to do the 9x12, it is absolutely going to the laundromat, and I will probably do the same with the 5x7 next time.
In general I don't have any complaints about how they have held up. I would generally steer more toward the bolder patterns because they will hide any ripples between the two layers better.
ETA: I have a looped wool rug in my family room, and I am considering eventually replacing with a Ruggable. The wool just. keeps. shedding. and it's getting really tiresome after a year. It would also be nice not to worry about dog toenails snagging loops. I also think we'll put a Ruggable in the basement when we finish it; it seems like a good option for an area that we hope - but can't ensure - will not get wet. The only thing is that they are not super plush/soft, especially with the thinner pad.
We recently spent a weekend at a rental that had two large ruggable rugs, and I’d never buy one after finally seeing them in person (up to that point, my husband had been strongly arguing in favor of getting ruggables after being influenced by social media ads, lol). They were really thin, the edges rolled up, and they just looked sloppy and cheap.

I have ruggables in a few places ... runners in the mudroom/laundry room, primary bath, and closet, and one with the padded cushion in my kitchen. I did have one in the entryway but kind of stupidly got a cream-colored one and it was just too hard to keep clean so I replaced it with a black-background regular rug. :-) I think they are good in areas where you basically never have to wash/clean (e.g. the closet) or where you frequently have to wash/clean (e.g. the mudroom, where I have one on a direct path between the doggie door and the rest of the house). There are a few times where I would have probably had to throw a regular rug away but was able to just throw these in the washer (e.g. spaghetti sauce spill in the kitchen, my kid throwing up spectacularly in our bathroom). I don't know that I'd go much bigger than 3x5 or runner-size for one I plan to clean regularly, though. I think they look better in the smaller sizes and are also easier to handle/wash.
I don't think they are as bad as the person described in that rental, I would guess that those covers were probably thrown in the dryer and shrank or were just overwashed. Mine lay flat.
dr.girlfriend, I would want a 8x10 in the LR - so maybe I should try a smaller one out in the entry from the garage before getting a large one in the LR....
I have one under our kitchen table (it’s either 5 x 5 or 6 x 6). It does its job because my kids are slobs but the ends definitely don’t stay flat and it’s pretty much the largest size that can fit in my washer. For messy areas like under a kitchen table or a mud room I can see their value but otherwise, meh.

We have an 8x10 in the living room and are finally getting rid of it because the kids aren’t as messy. It has definitely curled in the corners. The main part is fine, but if you have exposed edges it might be annoying.
Another direction is an outdoor rug. I searched pretty hard but found an indoor/outdoor rug with a nice feel to it and a pattern that that doesn’t scream “outdoor.” We need a 9x12 for our living room so a ruggable won’t work. We take the indoor/outdoor rug outside on a warm, sunny day twice a year and wash it with an electric power washer. It is super easy, dh does it early in the day and it’s dry by the evening. The rug looks good all the time and brand new after being power washed. We’ve had it for over 2 years. You could put a pad under it for more cushion.

I have a ruggable knock-off from Walmart in my dining room. My dogs love to have a accidents on it. I haven't machine washed it yet because it's cleaned up really easily. It doesn't really absorb like a normal rug. It's not especially soft but I like it a lot for the dining room. No issues with corners curling.
