I got a Mirena placed in Feb 2018 and had a very very light period in March. I have had no period since. I have been having some spotting today not enough to require a tampon but it’s on the tp and a very small spot on a liner. It was bright red this morning but is now darker in color.
Anyway my question is - after 5 years of no period/spotting should I be concerned that I am spotting now?
At my last annual exam my doctor informed me that FDA had changed approval for Mirena to 8 years so this is still my original one with no recent removal/insertion.
So, I started suddenly spotting on my Mirena earlier this year and was also like WTF is this? My GYN was unconcerned. We did replace my IUD, because I was close to 8 years, and it stopped it right away. I have spotted a bit here and there since but I'm also on a GLP 1 medicine and that seems to also mess with people's cycles and bring on spotting.
I will just add that it really telling how much I felt like my quality of life went down the few months I was spotting. I had totally forgotten what it was like to just be going about your day and suddenly bleed. It was really startling in a way that it shouldn't have been, considering I first got my period at age 9 but I was like oh, fuck no, we are NOT going back to this shit.
I've been spotting with my Mirena since starting semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy). I've had the Mirena since March 2020.
I am so interested to see what research will show about these meds and fertility. It really seems to be doing something interesting with period regulation, if nothing else.
I’ve had a mirena for a little over 2yrs, and I have never stopped spotting/bleeding. I think it’s better now? But I am definitely not like most who don’t get periods.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

I've had my mirena since May 2019 and about once a year I have a week of spotting. It always surprises me when it happens since it's so irregular. But it's nothing I (or my doctor) have been concerned about.
I’m on my second mirena and would get random spotting when I had the first one in. dr said that was totally normal. I have not had any spotting since I had the second one put in.

I've had 3 Mirenas, although I never had any one more than about 6.5 years. As I would get closer to the time to replace them, I'd always start a bit of spotting when I would otherwise be due for a period

I just had my Mirena replaced yesterday. The last one was placed in April 2018 and I'd noticed increasing spotting over the last few months. My doctor said I could keep the old one in for 3 more years but was happy to get me a new one. I was nervous because this was the first time I had one inserted when I wasn't postpartum but it was fine.
I had a very similar question, OP. I’ve had my Liletta for maybe four years? I didn’t have a period for years. The past few months I’ve had increasing spotting. And now this month I had basically a real period!
I am wondering “is my Liletta running out? Can that happen?”
I had my mirena for around 3 years with zero spotting or bleeding. Over the past year, I’ve had a couple of spotting periods and more of a heavy spotting/light flow period once. I’ve also gotten a lot more migraines lately, which were at nearly zero for the first few years (and awful before the IUD). I do feel like it’s losing its power, but I logically realize it should still last another couple of years.
I am on the EXACT same timeline as you, and last month I spotted "heavily" for about 4 days, first time in YEARS. I spoke to my PCP about it and she was not worried in the slightest, but did say that if it happened again we could talk about replacing the Mirena sooner rather than wait the full 8 years.

The same happened to me after about 5 years and I ended up getting it replaced with a new one. It can last longer, but it wasn’t providing the full benefit any longer. The replacement has been perfect and I’m back to two years spotting free.

I'm on my third Mirena and noticed that with my last I had more frequent spotting toward the end. I had it replaced because it was time, but I went back to no spotting with my newest.
