What is the “standard” tip at a restaurant in Canada? I feel like I’ve heard before that servers are paid a much higher wage than in the US and so tips aren’t generally as high.
I’m on a business trip and the cc machine gave me 15, 18 or 20%. I went with 20% because pretty standard/minimum in the US but just curious what the standard is here.
15-20% is average from when I was serving/owned a restaurant and saw the slips from staff cash outs. In BC the serving wage was replaced with minimum wage about 7 years ago so most servers make $15.65 now which will go up to $16.75 June 1st.
Is this another regional? Here, 20% is the normal. They have added a 25% auto button now as well on the debit machine at every restaurant I’ve been to lately. Min wage here is $15, which is where servers start at.
I feel like 15-18% is the norm. Less than that is pretty rude unless service was genuinely bad. Although I'm pretty sure most machines tip percentages on the total after tax so it works out to more.
I was tipping 20% during the pandemic but I've dropped back down now.
Personally I hate that machines are often set up with a tipping option for things that really do not need a tip. Like no. I'm not going to tip the liquor store cashier thanks.
ETA I will tip a higher percentage if I'm at a restaurant and my bill isn't very large. Like anything under $25 might get a 20-25% tip because I'm a softie and I know it's just as much work to serve my cheaper dish than a more expensive one.
I always choose 20% and will err on the side of rounding up if I'm paying with cash. Our standard tip options are 15, 18, and 20% so I'm sure lots of people choose less.
