I’ve been watching as much as I can so far but the time difference is roooooooough. So excited for tonight’s match though! So glad it’s at a reasonable hour lol.
I was a 4 year started on my college soccer team ( not D1) and still play in leagues 20+ years later. Mia Hamm was my idol. I had dreams of playing at UNC Chapel Hill- wasn't quite that level of skill
I LOVE the World Cup and we watch men and women's with the same passion. Glad the team's lawsuit was successful in achieving equal pay at least.
There's a lot of tripping from Vietnam so far. Excited to see an early first goal from one of the first timers. They're making good opportunities!
fryjack2, I still play too. It's a lifelong sport. DS2 is very into it and really starting to understand the game. We'll continue to check in with him before each season to see if he wants to continue, but I hope he plays for a long time.
I am of course cheering for team Canada. I don't know about our chances of winning though. We don't seem to be as good as the US at building young talent into the team, and we're still majorly relying on Christine Sinclair - even though she's the GOAT she's definitely at the end of her career.
Still, I've brainwashed my DD into cheering for Canada and I can tell how much it annoys my H so that's a win for me!
I'm back-up cheering for Australia. There's a fantastic documentary on the Matildas on Disney+, definitely worth a watch.
We’re flipping back and forth between Messi’s debut with Inter Miami (H’s from Miami and C is a huge Messi fan) and the USWNT. Tomorrow night we’re going to see our local NWSL team play (but several of their players are out for the World Cup).
I didn’t play long as a kid, but did go to college where we didn’t have football and instead had nationally ranked soccer teams. I’ve had the pleasure of watching college games with several of the USWNT players (and Sinclair)over the years.

I really want to watch, but they play at such weird times for it being held in a time zone not terribly far from me, and I have to go out to watch. I'm assuming that's for Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
I am excitedly following the Jamaican team! We managed to hold France to a draw in our first match which is amazing for a tiny country - not all of our players are professionals either.
Philippines won their first ever WWC match! Sir try that it came against New Zealand but we have a connection to a member of the Philippines team; apparently all there players are American-born.

Not all. Yes, many/most are, but some are part of the diaspora of other countries (Canada, Australia and Norway from what I saw). I believe only a couple are born and raised in the Phillippines. Having said that, it doesn't take away from this big win and if anything, regardless of the make-up of their national team, this can help inspire many young girls in the Phillippines to play so that eventually Phillippines-raised women can make up more of the team (same for other teams where there are members of the diaspora making up the team as they try to grow the women's game). And to be clear, I don't see anything inherently wrong in playing for any team you're eligible for if you can make the team.

They definitely were amazing! Insane how they can be that good if they do not play pro
Gah. Do not like that we are down a goal this early. I hate the pressure of being down.
Our defending is leaving a lot to be desired at times I hope they come back out in the second half in a different head space. That goal early seems like it threw them off a bit.

Agreed. And the Dutch are passing so freaking well. Just feels like a game of keep away at times. Fingers crossed the half time chat gets them in a better headspace and attacking the back line better.
I’m a pretty casual observer. Is it just me or do women use more strategy in their play?
Compared to the men? Eh, maybe. I think in general teams have a style they like to play. The game against Vietnam was weirdly slow because the Vietnamese team plays really close man-to-man, where the US' style is to keep more space. In this game, we're still giving space, which is working against us because the Dutch are doing a better job of finding the pockets of space and keeping the ball there where we can't intercept as well.
I do think the men tend to use more of their strength and speed and just focus on getting it up the field while the women do a better job of moving the ball around and taking their time to ultimately advance it forward even if it means dropping it back first.
Ugh, that game was not fun to watch. I know Morgan is supposed to be amazing, but she's rarely really impressed me (except for having the cutest nose ever). And her off sides goal tonight! She knows better than that. I don't know what she and Rodman were up to but it was not great.
I love Horan so much! I'm so sad we let her go, but then I see her tape ring which makes me so happy. I was waiting for her to get pissed enough to get shit done, and she did. 😂 She's like Christine Sinclair that way - you'll know when she's mad because she'll score just to tell you to eff off. I'm glad she and her teammate seemed to be getting along after the game because that was chippy for awhile.
Why is Vlatko (US coach) so afraid to sub? We are very deep at the forward position and should have used fresh legs in the final 10-15 minutes. The Dutch center back was replaced and we didn’t take advantage!

Not the Americas. Most of the games are at 3 or 6 AM EST. I assume they are targeting European audiences (and of course, AUS and NZ so people can go live to games). I get it, but I hate it, lol.

I actually thought Morgan played well last night -- she knows she's a target so she did a really nice job of pulling defenders to her to open up lanes for Rodman and Smith. Her offsides goal was amazing aside from the offsides part . I am not a huge Horan fan, honestly, and I thought she was awful until her goal.
