Today is my birthday. DH and the kids are working very hard in the kitchen to make me breakfast while I am working in the office. Lots of restaurant talk and kitchen lessons being learned. I'm surprised he doesn't have them responding "yes chef" yet. It's super cute. But, I just really, really want a cup of coffee. I've been up for 2.5 hours and still haven't had a cup because I was banished from the kitchen. I'm dying. My caffeine dependency is no joke and I thought my family knew this about me.
It's looking like a slow work day and then we're heading to visit my parents for the weekend and get in some lake time. It'll be our first trip up this summer because we've been so busy! All my cousins will be around too, so it should be a great time to catch up with everyone. And then the girls are staying up there for the week while DH, SS, and I head home. It'll be their first time being away from home for so long overnight! I'm sure they'll be fine, but I'm going to miss them!

twinmomma, happy birthday! But yeah they need to deliver you some coffee.
I’m very tired this morning. Our youngest caught H and I discussing the idea of leaving Florida last night, cue tears and family drama. then H andI stayed up until 1am playing a boardgame, generally angsting, and googling state income tax rates. She crawled into our bed at some point.
I had a very vivid dream that we moved to Sweden (I’ve been on a Fredrick Backman kick) and when I asked why everyone was still speaking English someone told me that we were in the expat grocery store. When my alarm went off and h reminded me that I’d committed to meeting my old employee for coffee before work, I was very tired.
It was great to see her for coffee though! No big plans for tonight. H has a thing and the girls and I will hang. Tomorrow we have back to school shopping and we are watching my parents’ dog for a couple days.
Happy birthday twinmomma! I hope you get your coffee soon!
TGIF! DD and I are attending a 3 hour taekwondo seminar tomorrow to learn some new kicks and sparring skills. DH and the boys will head to a birthday party for one of DS2's friends. Then we will meet up for dinner. On Sunday, DD, my mom and I will do some back to school shopping for DD. How is it already almost August? I am most looking forward to some downtime in the AC since it has been way too humid and hot this week. I'm kind of happy that there are storms in the forecast so I have an excuse to be lazy inside.
It's 1000 degrees here. So we are at a loss what to do tonight since it usually involves grilling and sitting outside. Cue my ongoing griping about my lack of a pool. Of course my pool money is going to our state university, so a better investment, but still. I want to float.
Tomorrow, my floating dreams come true. We are heading to a friend's cabin and lake for the day. We are supposed to spend the night, but Dh is adamant about coming home. We will see if Dd agrees since some of her friends will be there.
Happy birthday twinmomma! Have a great day and weekend!
My interview went well yesterday. My friend who recommended me said the rest of the committee raved about me. They interview another candidate next week. The committee meetings are a bit of a time commitment and unpaid, but DH really encouraged me to do it so he can deal with the extra childcare he’ll have to do if I get it.
It’s 7 am here and I still have nothing on my work calendar today, so I just booked myself a day pass to go to the pool at a local resort. The pass was $50 and includes a $30 food and beverage credit. So I’m looking at it as buying myself lunch and just paying $20 to hang at a nice pool for the day and read a fun book. I should be reading the book for my work women’s ERG book club taking place next week, but that is a concern for future me
DH and my older two kids are in Maryland visiting family, so it’s just me and the two little boys this weekend. Tonight they’ll probably go in our pool, tomorrow DS3 is doing a play date and then I have a babysitter at 6 pm to go to dinner with a friend. Sunday afternoon I have another babysitter for a few hours to see the Barbie movie with a friend. And potty training continues for DS3 - he’s doing pretty well on peeing in the potty but does not want to poop in the potty 😬
I’m off today and working tomorrow. There is a huge event that was outside got moved inside with less capacity and everyone is complaining. The performers are in full on outfits with heads think mascot type. Do you really want them to pass out in the middle of the performance from the heat in front of your kids? People are so entitled.
I'm more than ready for a weekend. Just maybe not this one. We have an adult birthday party to go to... which sounds nice. BUT. I had to get a sitter. And it's the same day as Taylor Swift, and apparently my go-to sitter (who charges me $5 an hour and refuses to take more!) and all of her friends who could be backups are not just Swifties, but also have too much disposable income. We found one who honestly seems awesome, but having to pay $20/hour, is painful in comparison. And the party is a pool party... I love pools and swimming, but something about swimsuits and this group of people (mostly parents from school) terrifies me. I even bought a tankini vs. my normal bikini, since I feel like every time I've done anything pool related with grown ups, they're in one pieces... but DH, the kids, my sister, and my friend all veto'd the tankini, so I'm going to return it and save the money.
Beau and I leave tonight after I drop off DS at his dad's. We're going camping and riding with his brother at our new favorite spot in Eastern Washington. I'm glad Beau's brother is going with us because the last few times I've seen him he looks depressed and miserable. He owns a small auto mechanic shop and is fed up with Karen type customers and his one other mechanic has been slacking. He's in his 50's, single, and despite owning his own home, he stays at their mom's house most of the time. Getting him out and doing things he enjoys will be good for him and hopefully cheer him up. Plus, he bought a trailer from their sister in February and hasn't used it yet, so we'll help him work out the trailer bugs on his first trip out.
sdlaura, we are SO SPOILED. Our neighbor's daughter (who I affectionately call one of my bonus kids) watches our kids 99% of the time. If we go somewhere with her parents, she refuses to accept money from us. I actually had to negotiate her UP to $5/hour. Her mom won't let her accept more until she's CPR certified. I have tried to point out that I'm not CPR certified, so I don't particularly care if she's CPR certified, but it falls on deaf ears. And I'll take it. $20/hour *is* a great deal. Just doesn't feel like it compared to $5 lol.
FWIW, the party host has tried to get me to go to things and "be a party animal." She is "highly encouraging" ubers and getting a babysitter to stay late and I just... can't. These are my kid's friend's parents. They will get the mundane wine sipping version of k3am, not the party animal. And since it's at a pool, my guess it will be more beer/spritzer beverages, so I'll be even more mellow, since that's not my jam.
twinmomma, happy birthday!!!! I hope your weekend is fantastic!
I would take $20 an hour sitter any day. DD1 is only 12, but she already charges a minimum of $20 per job and charges $10 an hour. However, she has an early curfew and parents have to drive her themselves. We are going camping this weekend. Our first and probably only camping trip of the summer. I felt like packing was incredibly involved. For about to get on the road. I think everybody is ready for a weekend away and some lake and river time.
We are on our way to melt at a soccer game tonight — our local MLS is playing Wrexham. It’s hot as balls.
Tomorrow is supposed to be worse. We are going to Barbie to escape the heat.
Sunday — DH and I are doing a mystery picnic around Philadelphia. We got the first clue, then each place provides a snack and the next clue. Once you get them all, the last clue takes you to a place to picnic
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I saw the acupuncturist today. DD and I are having a quiet afternoon. Picking up a retired gym friend and taking them to open gym.
Saturday who knows what the plan is.
Saturday night I need to throw the pork into the crockpot before I go to bed so it will be ready for the park concert Sunday at 1. DD gym is running the concession stand. Pulled pork sandwiches and teriyaki chicken with yakashobi noodles plus snow cones and sides.
DD1 and DH have been at the beach house since Wed evening. Dd2 and I are heading down tomorrow. I had a meeting at work today so dd2 hung out at home for a few hours since she refused to go to the beach.
DH and I haven’t been out together since mid-June, so we have plans tomorrow evening. Sunday is supposed to be beautiful - mid 70s and sunny - so we will probably head to the beach for a while. Tomorrow doesn’t look great weather wise, so I hoping tomorrow we can all hang out and just… be. Maybe do some crafts or a puzzle, or watch a movie. That’s so rare for us. We are always going in a million directions.

I'm at work today. Been steady all day, but finally slowed down a little. Probably a bit better at home. Yesterday was intense parenting day: School shopping and organization, high pet care needs, and lots of cleaning. Still need soccer cleats, but at least ready for school. I think we start pretty early comparatively speaking.

We are officially on vacation! We checked off tons of Seattle must dos yesterday walking over 6 miles while also making good use of the rental scooters. Dinner last night was amazing at the Metropolitan Grill with table side flambé apples for dessert. We get on our cruise today and are all very excited to see Alaska and disconnect.
After this week we only have a few days before school starts and Dh and I are into crazy busy times at work so trying to slow down quickly and enjoy the breathing space now. DS1 starts middle school this year and we have no idea what the school supply list looks like. For elementary school the school used their state and PTA funds to provide them to everyone. I’m thinking maybe a schedule book to write down homework and some pencils and paper and that might be it for day 1.
