I'm about to leave to watch my ds's first pre-game marching band show before the first football game of the season and I SO don't want to go. I'm lame, I know, but I'm tired and sore and my dh is working nights this week so I'm even going alone. But ds is less than enthused about marching band already and has asked to quit multiple times, so I at least need to drag my butt to the game to cheer him on.
I might also need to brave the school drop off line much more than expected this year. Dd's bus ride has been over an hour in the afternoon each day even though we only live 10 min. from the school, just from the bus being a little late and her being the last stop (she's also the last stop in the morning so her ride in the morning is only 10 min.). She asked if I could pick her up in the afternoon. I did a whole year of that when we moved for her last year of elementary because I had to because we moved out of her school's bus zone, and I LOATHED having to do it. I am already committed to driving her 1 day a week because I have to get her to dance before the bus would get her home. I told her so far that I'd at least pick her up 1 other day a week, and asked if maybe her friend who lives down the street would get her mom to do 1 day a week (I'd drive her friend the day I do too), and then she'd only have to do the hour bus ride 2 days.
Can someone explain to me why backyard furniture are so freaking expensive? Why do they cost more than regular, good quality, furniture?
Because it needs to withstand being out in the sun and the rain and all that. The conditions inside are less harsh. What are you looking for? I'm very happy with my outdoor sectional from Ohana. I found a very nice wood-look powder coated steel dining set for a reasonable price from home depot. Both are holding up well. I have custom covers for everything for winter/rain.
Have you heard of a mouse jiggler? You put your mouse on them and they shake or jiggle just enough to keep your mouse moving across your screen. My work has a FOUR minute shut down and it’s a huge pain to restart. You can buy one on Amazon.
Or you can do it the old fashioned way--open a word doc, set something firm but not heavy on the space bar, walk away as it creates pages of spaces, then delete the doc when you're done.
This is what I learned when working with a micromanager. You're welcome!
I went to the grocery store a little bit ago, and I bought myself 9 boxes of "kid" cereal because of the sales they were having. The cashier asked me if I ran a preschool.
Me too. I had a fleeting thought of changing my fb profile pic to his mugshot, then I read he is using it to raise money for his campaign. I don't want anyone thinking I am a trump supporter and it would pretty much violate my strict no politics on fb rule I have for myself. So that's where my thoughts ended on that.
I made it my screensaver on my home computer. It brings me joy.

My little old man cat only eats one type of wet food that is over $3/can. I got a few great deals today that brought it down to just over $2/can.
I don't usually get Starbucks, but I got an offer from Delta for 1000 bonus miles if I make two purchases in a week. I had a cold brew with pumpkin cream. It was delicious.
H took 3 business trips last month and submitted for reimbursement (he has to pay for everything upfront) and 3 weeks later still nothing. I have been asking him to inquire and for some reason he doesn’t want to do it, but I want my money.
The work WWYD reminded me: my son (23) was told at his job that the amount of overtime he works will be reflected in his year end bonus. He works at a nonprofit (he loves the work; it’s his first post college job) and makes under 42k. He’s not going to do overtime. I support his position and I’m the most rule following, boss pleasing person ever.

I once waited 8 weeks to be reimbursed! I had to escalate multiple times to get paid. I was luck to be able to afford it, but I know not everyone is in that position. I hope you get your money soon.
Wow! DD’s symphonic band in junior high has 62 kids! There are two more levels of band below that. The marching band in high school has probably 150-200 kids? We aren’t there yet so not sure.
Football is a big deal. Between football, cheerleaders, drill team, and band I bet close to a quarter of the school is involved in the games in some capacity.
That’s amazing!
Our middle school had a 100 person symphonic band! But there’s a huge drop off in participation once the kids hit high school for a variety of reasons. It kills me that the MS band is bigger than the HS band when the middle school has fewer than 400 kids (so 25% of the school does it) and the HS has almost 1,300 students (huge regional HS).
Football isn’t big here. Now some students go to games, which is a huge change from my childhood (then it was only football/cheer/band parents in the stands), but it’s not a huge thing. I wish we could separate marching band from football. Such a waste of my Friday nights (I’m tired and loath football, so it’s so boring).
Help a new band mom out. I’ve tried googling, but is symphonic band just the concert band? As opposed to marching band? Our MS has ~300 band kids and while I’m happy he’s enjoying it now, I’m thankful he’s not outside practicing in 110° heat. I feel like I’m melting walking to my car!
My 6th grader brought his instrument home for the first time today. Our pup was not sure what to make of the loud noises emanating from the big brass monster. 🤣

Yes, symphonic band is another name for concert band. Our school also has marching band and jazz band and my kid does all of those (plus regional honors bands, state symphonic orchestra, and a professional jazz band and a professional concert band). Once you get started in the band world you end up doing a ton lol!

Thanks for answering what was probably a very Band 101 question! I was in choir throughout MS and HS so this is all brand new to me. I was a bit skeptical of his choice considering he hates loud noises, but he seems to be loving the first two weeks. I’m sure it helps to have a mini 15 person class with other 6th graders all learning the same instrument.

Is that even legal?
It’s a salaried job, so it is. No bonus is required, and I suppose the boss gets to decide how to measure effort, or commitment, or whatever. But dude.
There’s a reason you have so much turnover: pay your people. They WANT to work there, they WANT to do good work that helps people, but don’t burn them out and pay as much as you can. If you can’t pay much, ok, but don’t expect more than a standard work week. I know this is first world problem for him, but I also know this is a big issue in nonprofits generally.

You’re welcome! I hope he loves it! For me and my oldest it was a lifeline and connected us with people we fit in with, especially in HS. For those who are in it, it’s a family and a really supportive environment. I did choir as well, and both band and choir in college, and definitely feel like music is such a special thing.

I think it depends on the area? For DD her junior high has 3 levels of bands. Symphonic is the top band and they have more contests/performances. Then you have concert 1 and concert 2. Plus beginner band.
High school I’m not sure. All band students have to do marching band. Yes doing that when it’s 110 and starting practice in July sounds awful but I guess we will see?! Then after that it’s concert season and there are various levels.

My son's guitar teacher is teaching him Paranoid by Black Sabbath and I'm sorry that's worth the price of admission even though the kid isn't really into guitar.
Is the right wing talking about another Covid shutdown? I've seen whispering online and I haven't seen anything about this, seems to be coming from them.
100% they are. Someone I work with is on that side of things and she has been on one about masks and shutdowns all week. And same with people I see online. So weird.

I got a verbal job offer today for that position I really want. HR should have a written offer with salary and benefits to me on Monday. I’m super excited, but still not sure if they’re going to come in where I need them to.
I have to think that they will because the first position I applied for with the same org hired someone more junior because my minimum salary ask was too high (although still lower than I make now), but when that hiring manager called to tell me they’d selected someone else, she told me that the hiring manager for this position really wanted to talk to me. And several interviews and panel interviews later, here we are.
It’s been a REALLY LONG process. I applied for the first position last November and this current one in January. But this org is pretty special and I’ve wanted to work for them for so long.

It’s because of BA.2.86. Rates are increasing and this particular variant is concerning. Plenty of epidemiologists are worried, so maybe they’re ramping up their rhetoric in preparation.

THANK YOU! 😂 I was like, um, is anyone gonna help me here??? Truly, I appreciate it:))
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

I have never been to New Orleans, but really want to go and I fully plan on getting there sooner rather than later.

mofongo - I should add that BA.2.86 is concerning enough that the CDC and WHO are rumbling about it getting a new Greek letter, which hasn’t happened since Omicron. They are waiting to see how it spreads, but it’s meeting all the other criteria so far. That’s probably why you’re seeing right wing folks complaining because they’re not as easily able to hide their heads in the sand.

Yep, the remarks start with "Well another election is coming up so here come the masks...." and end with "Do not comply" Ughhh....literally our hospitals have actual census numbers showing an increase in hospitslizations....actual humans to count....you cannot deny science and real objective data...unless you are the GOP. (Note I'm not even classifying as right wingers anymore, just the GOP, because I think the hate and stupidity involves even moderate Rs at this point.
