1. PNW here and I try and shoot for November 1st. I've had a little culture shock as we went from mid to upper 70s and sunny to barely 60 with rain so I feel chilly even though the house isn't cold temp wise.
2. I'm in a rut and DD is tired of eating the same old thing so I could use some new ideas.
1. New England. We try to make it to mid- to end of Oct, but my office was so cold that I turned on the heat pump yesterday. The boiler for the rest of the house is still off.
2. I'm in a rut too. Over the weekend I made chicken noodle soup and chicken salad for DH and DD2, but then my mom showed up with her chicken soup and chicken salad, which they both like better. I also made a huge vat of chicken chili. I was hoping that would be dinner for a couple of nights, but DH ate literally half of the pot. Now there's enough for me to have a couple of meals, but not for DH. But fall is all about soups and casseroles for me - all the stuff that I'm too hot to make over the summer, and hopefully things that I cook once and eat twice. I made turkey meatballs last week - we had spaghetti and meatballs once, and I made a bubble bake with them another night.
1. Midwest. In our house we have hot water heat, so the systems are separate. We don't have to flip from AC to heat, they can both run at any time. But, we do have temperature limits as to when they come on in our programmable thermostat.
2. Food rut here also. I don't enjoy baking and cooking all that much, so I can't say oh this is my favorite fall recipe. I actually wish I enjoyed it more, but making food is more of a means to an end for me. I am picking up pre-made pumpkin and apple pie from the local bakery for work.

1. Hahahaha Texas. It’s 96 here today. (Sob, hiccup)
2. So many soups. I made black bean soup from Two Peas and their Pod last night. Healthy and really delicious. Would add Ro-Tel tomatoes next time to add a little kick. I also love Belle of the Kitchen’s Crickpot Chicken Noodles. They are cooking in my kitchen right now. Super comforting. I also love to make no knead bread in my Dutch oven. It goes well with all the soups and I find it so fascinating that the recipe works. It doesn’t seem like it should for some reason.
1. CA. Most of September and October are still warm days but cooler nights. We've still got windows open at night. TIL that some people apparently have to chose between running heat or AC.
2. I'm always in a food rut. My kids have broken me. There are exactly zero foods I enjoy cooking any time of year. =D

1. Florida so the heat doesn’t come on unless it’s likely to be cold for several days. It smells like burning dust when it turns on. It rarely gets particularly cold during the day so some years it just never comes on.
2. I also make a lot of soups just generally. I don’t often wait until it’s cold I just go for it. I also really like to make things with apples. I love the smell of cooking apples.
I love a crockpot full of bean soup with cornbread. My kids favorite meal of mine is chili. I made a creamy chicken noodle this weekend which is really good. My favorite is taco, but I don't get it often since I am the only one that eats it.
I also love a big pot of spaghetti and meatballs in cooler weather.
I live in the mountains. We usually don't put our heat on until mid October, but we make fires in our fireplace starting about now.
For fall foods, I'm a sucker for anything pumpkin. Pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin bread are two favorites. I also like potato dishes like potatoes au gratin.
1. While we’re in the southern half of the country in a place known for being warm (San Diego), we’re close enough to the coast that it can get pretty chilly in the winter, especially at night and if we don’t get sun during the day. So we use heat overnight usually from about December to March.
We have two fireplaces that we haven’t used since having kids. They’re gas but pretty outdated and have this weird fake ash stuff in them, so we’re had babygates blocking them forever. I need to get some fireplace people out here to modernize them so we can use them again.
2. Pumpkin turkey chili. I should get the ingredients to make it now that you have spurred the thought! I made it a ton during all the times I’ve been nursing during the last 11+ years because it’s pretty allergen free and my babies were really sensitive to what I ate.
I never really know when I do, just kinda when I’m cold.
I make this salad w chicken, baby spinach, roasted brussel sprouts and roasted sweet potatoes, feta, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, diced apples, and balsamic vinegrette. I meal prep it and eat it everyday and sometimes 2 weeks in a row and never get tired of it-it’s SO good

1. No clue about turning on the heat, whenever we start to feel cold, no specific time.
2. I don’t really cook, so nothing I’m looking forward to making but I do love the foods traditionally made for thanksgiving and am looking forward to mac and cheese.
1. If you live in the northern half of the US when do you normally turn the heat on? The whole house? We try to wait until mid-October. But I do have a space heater in my home office that I'll turn on to take the chill out in the morning. I'm already crying inside thinking about what our heating bill will be for a house that's twice as big as our old one this year...
2. What are your favorite recipes to make during the fall? I admittedly don't cook, that's all DH. I love when he makes congee - it's Chinese rice porridge and so yummy and such a comfort food for me now.
...the CA girl turned on the heat today. We slept with the windows open last night and it was about 62 inside when we woke up. My blood is not cut out for 62.

186momx- nope nope nope nope. I would die at 62 degrees indoors. The older I get, the more narrow my temperature comfort zone becomes. But then I also work from home and DH is a SAHD so we are always home during the day.
mommyatty, oh it would be much warmer if we were actually home. My office is kept at about 69. DH likes to use the wood fireplace on the weekends. Last year he hardly could use it because of stagnant air though.
I lived on the border of Vermont and New Hampshire for two years before moving to San Diego. At the time, I just got used to it. I had a sleeping-bag like coat and took up snowboarding. One night I was walking home from a bar through the snow and was like "huh, my eyelashes and nose hairs are frozen together, and I don't even mind!"
However, I think I'd have a harder time living there with kids. Now I wouldn't be able to just relax inside when I didn't feel like going out. I can barely get my kids to wear shoes - I'm so glad I don't have to worry about kids' winter gear besides the one long weekend a year we go see snow! And I'd need a much larger house with a basement if we couldn't comfortably hang out outside year-round.

I'm in the Northern part of the PNW. I don't have a set time of when I turn on the heat, but it's been on and off in the last month. It's been 40's in the morning and the last couple of weeks haven't been above 70. I've also had my mattress pad heater on at night too.
I don't change the way I cook too much in the fall or winter. Beau's brother bought a Shepard's pie from Costco when we were camping that was delicious. I'm going to try to replicate it this week.
1. If you live in the northern half of the US when do you normally turn the heat on?
2. What are your favorite recipes to make during the fall?
1. Late October / early November. Once the temps start to drop inside, it goes on. I have natural gas so reasonable $ for heat. My AC is another story so heat goes on, as soon as we need it.
2. Stuffed acorn squash, farro and white bean soup, garlic rosemary chicken with cranberries, Turkey meatballs in crock pot
1. If you live in the northern half of the US when do you normally turn the heat on? - I live in NC but it doesn't take much for me to get cold, Ha! I can't remember when we really turn our heat on; if it drops to like 67/68 in the house then its time for heat!
2. What are your favorite recipes to make during the fall? - Just the usual comfort foods - chili & cornbread, roast in the crockpot, homemade soups.
