I mentioned yesterday that our mudroom has had a horrid smell recently that seems to come and go, and sure enough by evening yesterday I really couldn't smell it. Today I finally figured out what it is!! We had 2 storm doors installed on the front of the house a couple of weeks ago and this morning when I was leaving I happened to put my face close to the door and recognized the smell but more mildly. I was like hmph. I was out today and came home around 2pm like yesterday and the day before and the smell was overpowering in the mudroom, because when the sun hits that part of the house the doors smell like melting plastic! I went to the other one and sniffed and could smell it there too but not as strong because that door has more protection from the sun. I'm not normally home during the workday and our weekends have been rainy so it hasn't happened much for me to witness until now. Are they going to smell like this forever? Yikes. Well now I'm off to find that deleted email asking me to review the product.....
I pulled a wildrice today in Egypt. Bought two figurines for WAY too much money because I did the exchange calculation wrong. 🤦♀️ thankfully my mistake was <$200, but I’m still mad at myself, even though I loved the wooden elephant I got. 🤣
Aww poor wildrice! You'll never live that one down LOL
My twins turn one today!! I can't believe we made it 😂 I'm hoping they enjoy their small celebration tonight with a couple friends. I feel a little guilty I sent them to daycare, but I've missed an obscene amount of work for child related reasons the last six months. I realize they don't actually know or care that it's their birthday though since they're so young!

Happy Birthday to your twins!!
Sendinf them to daycare was a-ok. My kids don't get their birthday off. Kids get treated so special on their birthdays at daycare/school!

Oh no! I hope you get many years of joy out of it 🤣

Yes, it's a thing. It's basically the warming of the air between the storm door and the painted door and the paint starts to smell.

This makes sense. Who knew?! It probably doesn't help at all that the door is painted black.
I work on scientific journals, but am not a scientist in any way. I understand basic concepts but have never really needed to have an in-depth understanding of what they are actually talking about.
One journal recently asked me to start doing a check of papers to make sure they met all the requirements. I have never felt so dumb in my life. I am basically just checking figures and the figure legends to make sure they have all the information that they are supposed to, and I have no idea what any of these words mean. I'm supposed to check for things like "does the figure show the value of n and describe the statistical test used?" which seems pretty easy except that I do not understand the words well enough to even know if the question is relevant to this particular figure.
Most of the people I work with are not only understanding this stuff, but they are reading it in english with is often a second (or third, fourth) language for them. I have no idea how they do this.
To be fair, the second journal that I work on is much simpler and I do understand that one. This journal relates to molecular biology and it makes my head spin.
This reminds me of the time I went to a friend's dissertation defense, in medicinal chemistry. Pretty sure I understood <1% of his presentation!
Were they served with caramelized onions and sour cream? Cause if not you did not get the right ones. LOL
No, they were just plain. Nothing with them. They weren't bad at all, just nothing exciting like I expected.
They need something ... J's dad makes them every Christmas (they're Polish) w sauerkraut, mushrooms, and caramelized onions as fillings w sour cream on the side.
I got my updated Covid vaccine and flu shot at Rite Aid this afternoon. Hopefully I'll be feeling OK later! It's 85 degrees out here and I'm over it. I'll probably take my DS to the park after I pick him up though since it won't be this nice forever.
H came home from work actually on time and went straight to lie down because he has a migraine. I am a horrible person that my initial feeling when he is sick is always annoyance and not sympathy, lol. I want him to feel better of course. Maybe I'm just a little miffed because if the situation were reversed I couldn't just go lie down, I'd have to make sure it was OK and that he could go pick DS up. But I mean he'd absolutely help of course. Just annoying default parent stuff I guess!
I'm in PA for work. Work asked what we wanted to eat and I mentioned I'd love to try a Philly cheesesteak. OMG, they brought us some and it was so good! I'm just north of Philly, so they said it's pretty authentic. We also had pirogies, they were good, but I don't get the appeal necessarily.
Excuse me?
JK - But real Polish Babci pierogis can't be beat.
Do you ever feel like baking and eating an entire pan of pillsbury apple turnovers? Because that’s what I feel like doing right about now.
You write that as if it's something wrong. Sounds perfectly normal to me!!
I'm sitting here, waiting for someone to approve some timesheets because my company has gotten itself into a tizzy about timesheets. They're sending dire emails to a bunch of us, but some of us are second-tier approvers. Until the first tier approves, we're just stuck in the cross-fire. I get their importance, but the level of anxiety is just a little over the top from my perspective.
I managed to get dengue last week - I do not recommend that to anyone else! It is a week later and today is my first day back at work and I just feel exhausted.
My poor 11 yo son has also got it and he is worse than me. he's had the full remit of symptoms - high fevers, joint pain, headaches, diarrhea and no energy at all. I am finding it really hard to see my usually energetic sporty kid being like this for nearly a week.
Ooof. I had dengue when I was in the Peace Corps and it was terrible. I wound up in the hospital for four days with a fever of 105 and terrible eye pain/joint pain. I hope you and your kid are feeling better soon.
I felt terrible since last night after flu/COVID shots. I ended up taking it as a sick day, but still signing on to two meetings.
Our neighbors have two little girls that are 4 and 5 and so damn adorable. It makes me miss having little ones so much but they also are so crazy that it makes me NOT miss them also. Good reminders of good and bad times with little ones.
I finished my PhD and had a week of a crappy period and now a week of a terrible cold. WTF is this? How shot was my immune system? Although maybe I should just be thankful that I was healthy for the final weeks of my program!!

I never get to be sick and recover enough to parent while not totally miserable. H always either gets sick right after me and/or he can't take off work to care for DS etc etc etc. I get resentful every time it happens. I want to rest and recover too H!

Oh this is totally a thing after a high stress period ends.
