DD is asking for concealer and foundation for her birthday. Any suggestions? She has combination skin that is very acne prone. She uses retinol which is helping with new breakouts but she has some scarring she hates and wants to cover. Looking in stores is overwhelming to her because there are so many options. Any suggestions? What to do your teens use?
She wants lip balm, too, but that is much more straight forward!

For cheap - I got dd cover girl concealer.
For more expensive - I got her Tarte shape tape because it gets great reviews. I got it for her for Christmas and she really liked it a lot. Tarte has a lot of sales especially around holidays so I’ve gotten it at cheaper prices.
For foundation - that is so hard because there really are so many options and I have combination acne prone skin and a lot of stuff just doesn’t work on my skin. Dd doesn’t typically wear any. I’ve just given her random ones of mine that didn’t work for me because her skin is not as oily or as acne prone.
Do you have a Sephora or ulta around? What about taking her for her birthday to talk with somebody there for recommendations and get samples. I know Sephora does this and will give samples. I think ulta does too. When my fav foundation changed I went around just getting a bunch of samples. Assuming you’re ok with her going with a more expensive type foundation. The problem with cheaper drugstore ones is no samples and I find it so hard to color match and so many just don’t end up working out so I spend more $$ that way anyways.
luckystar2 thanks! I like Tarte products myself so maybe I’ll look for a sale on that. Ulta gives her an instant migraine with the perfume up front but maybe Sephora will be better.

I'd go to the Ulta inside Target if you have that. I feel it's curated to the best picks without being overwhelming. I get a lot of makeup recommendations from instagram too.

I'd take her to Sephora and have someone do a makeover on her. I think they're free if you spend $100. That way she can have someone teach her how to apply and talk to her about the different products. Plus, doing that is so much fun! Just prepare her ahead of time that there's no way you're buying everything. Also, you may want to stop into to the store and ask if there's a makeup artist particularly good at subtle makeup for teens.
As far as price, I definitely wouldn't be willing to spend Sephora prices for foundation for a teenager (some of their foundations are close to $100). Other makeup, maybe, but foundation runs out quickly with daily use. Maybe ask at Sephora for them to focus on less expensive brands? Or use that as an information gathering session, then look for something cheaper.
I wore only expensive brands of makeup for years and years. I now wear Maybelline, and it's honestly amazing. The Fit & Flawless would probably be good for a teen because it's light to medium coverage.
Or, she may be more comfortable starting with a powder foundation -- Maybelline also makes one of those for cheap options, but lots of brands have them. I wore powder foundation instead of liquid until I was in my mid 20's.
