My 7.5 year old wants to learn to play chess. Her dad knows how to play a bit, but she isn’t great about listening to him when he’s trying to teach her something. I got them a chess set for Christmas, and I’m hoping to find a good step-by-step ‘this is how you play’ kind of thing where they can both follow along (even though he knows how to play). Does anyone know if a good book, app, or YouTube channel for this? We have some local in-person and online classes, but my daughter’s game schedule for her sports is so inconsistent that classes at set times are tricky.
DS played (and I think actually learned) on an app on his iPad, where you okay against the ‘computer’. He’s pretty good at it now, and beats me most of the time!
We got Storytime Chess for DS2’s birthday and it really helped him get it! Some of it was TOO basic, but overall, it was very helpful. He was five, but his 7YO brother had fun learning too.
My son and I learned to play using the physical game “No Stress Chess”, it starts with drawing cards and moving according to what the card says, then choosing between a bunch of cards, then actual chess. It was fun and easy to learn!
I second No Stress Chess. My kids and I started learning together when my oldest was 5. My youngest is now 6 and is a killer chess player…all learned from No Stress Chess.

My kids learned with No Stress Chess as well, and DD was interested so we got her a subscription to the Chess Kids app. It’s good and has multiple levels of AI opponents along with the option to play with other kids. The app has a lot of videos and seemed to help her learn.
