Ramen Quarters for vending machines or laundry Cocoa or tea if they have access to hot water Tumbler/water cup Small keychain flashlight Makeup wipes Hair ties Nail polish Fun lanyard for ID/key card
I’ll never forget the sweet memory I have of opening a care package my parents sent me shortly after I moved away to university. When my homesick self opened that box and pulled out the tin of Carnation hot chocolate mix with the mini marshmallows and the slogan across it that said “A warm hug on a cold day”, I literally cried.

Keychain breathalyzer
Freshman year, when we all had to be on a meal plan, a girl had this microwave thing that cooked pasta. I admired it so much her parents mailed me one, too. There are other microwave thingies to cook things like eggs and bacon, too, although I've not used them

Not a roll of quarters. Laundry and vending machines take student ID or credit cards at the three schools we toured.(we are now old)
You can look on the campus website and see how to load cash to her account. Lip care (gloss, balms, scrubs, chapstick) Lotion Laundry detergent (pods are not allowed at one campus we toured) Protein bars Freeze dried candies are really popular right now A hoodie
I'm sure you know this but I have to say it for all my Res Life friends - no candles. And some schools put restrictions on wax warmers as well. Schools are usually really good about listing prohibited items on their websites.
My recommendation is snacks - allllll the snacks. Also fun face masks - especially moisturizing ones because the halls are usually so dry.

Definitely snacks. Maybe some specific to her home if she is out of state? Like I send my parents MD crab cakes for Christmas because they now live in FL. Just an example of course lol. Maybe also some cool room decorations like string lights or organizers or something. I have been out of college for 20 years so I have no idea what dorms are like now. Snacks are always a good idea though.

Even back in the day, 25+ years ago, we could use our student cards. We did have the option for coins as well, and I can see that option disappearing.
Depending on the location of the school, though, there may be laundromats that have bars and wifi. I used those intermittently in my 30s even. But they all had change machines
Laundry is free (well- included in your dorm fee) at all the places we've toured. And everyone is super specific about what laundry detergent, etc can be used.
I'd send a ton of snacks and maybe some gift cards. $/GCs for Target or Walmart so she could buy soap, paper products, etc would probably be helpful.
I work in higher ed and I think face masks/self-care items are a fantastic idea. Also hair ties, because those are always going missing. Food. If she's in a cold weather state, touch screen gloves (I'm always losing them). Fancy gel pens. Make most of what you send consumables because what goes into that dorm room has to come out in the spring, and every university has a line of dumpsters at that time for the incredible amount of waste from the stuff they don't want to lug home.
