It's 28 degrees here and guess who woke up to a broken furnace? as I'm waiting for one of the 10 calls I have out to call me back, troubleshooting is telling me it's a blown circuit board. I DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR THIS RIGHT NOW! uuggghhhh
I'm sorry. I know you're up north and all, but... 28 degrees?! It's still October@!
ETA: high temps in my area for the next three days are in the mid 80s... I am not happy 😒
Yeah we always get this cold front the week of Halloween. EVERYONE around here talks about the "famous" Halloween Blizard of 1991. We had like 2 feet of snow and kids were still determined to trick or treat.
Then in about 2 weeks we will get a very unusual warm front where people will lose their minds and run around in shorts as the last hurrah!

L had homecoming last night. She looked absolutely amazing and has a great time, talked to people, stayed the whole time and said she felt confident. I’m so proud of her.

I’m spent…emotionally, socially and physically. My ds2’s team went to a championship today and lost. He sobbed. You could punch the child in the face and he wouldn’t bat an eye, he is tougher than tough. But this is the third championship he’s lost in a row and he always takes it hard. He’s not a starter in this division so I thought he wouldn’t take it so personally, but I was wrong. My ds1 has homecoming tonight and we’re leaving in a little for pictures at a friend’s. He’s feeling really out of step with his friends and I am just wishing he would find his people. He’s such a great kid and a good friend, but he’s too nice to be a teenage boy He continues to put himself out there and try new things and every damn one of them has been a disaster.
SwimDeep , it's not just the cooking and cleaning, it's the shopping and buying gifts and making appointments and planning, etc. My husband believed that my SAH duties were equal to his work, and that's good, but it wasn't until I went back to work, and he had SO MUCH MORE responsibility around the house and is now so much more tired all the time, that he really understood how much work housework really is. So yes, you should shrug!
So much this! I recently went back to work as well. H has been doing so much more kid duty on week days. I don't WFH and have meetings and firm start & end times where as he has tons of flexibility. He took DS to get his flu shot as well.
Also H has started actually doing a load of laundry and other household chores more often as he is at home. Now if only he'd take over calling drs and such for appts. I have very firm breaks. I was just explaining to him that it would be great if he could call some dr office and wait on hold etc because if I do that it means I don't get to pee or eat lunch depending which break I try to call on and how long the wait time is. #teacherlife

I always thought it was funny that the titans of industry in Atlas Shrugged are hiding away in the Rocky Mountains to get away from all the supposed lazy freeloaders. Who's going to clean your toilets, John Galt? Who is even manufacturing the toilets in the first place? Who is making and mending the clothes, growing the crops, minding the children, etc, etc, etc? It's such bullshit that wealthy people are rugged individuals that could do it all on their own. We can't have a technologically advanced society without everyone doing their part, and every part is important. Otherwise, it's all-day farming to survive and outhouses.

My husband is turning into one of those guys who are always out blowing the leaves. We have several large maple trees around the yard so it's a Sisyphean task, but that doesn't deter him.
Last night we all went to a Halloween party at a friend's house and she had hired her babysitter to keep an eye on all the kids. As soon as DD saw her she went downstairs, got to know her an even got her number. I joked that she spent the night hitting on the babysitter. I'm glad she had fun, though, and was able to get out.
Yesterday I had a parent email me because they were annoyed I hadn't been responding to her daughter's emails. The daughter is suspended and can only communicate with me via email. This is why I save all emails from parents and students. I merely forwarded her the email conversation between me and her child and asked, "Was there another email I've missed?"
Feel free to come for me, but expect me to bring the receipts.

It's so hard to be the parent of an awkward teenager. Some of the other teens always seem so put together, and it's hard to convince DD that other teens also feel out of place
My kids have been heinous assholes to ME, specifically, all week. And my daughter will cry after and be like "I didn't mean it when I said that I wish you'd lose custody because the worst foster parent is better than you." Yes, that's an actual thing she said.
I have lost my shit at them each today. They pushed me to the max. And I don't even feel bad about it because they kept pushing after my 78 attempts to de-escalate. I only feel bad that I apparently am a shitty ass mom who is raising ungrateful, disrespectful, entitled, fundamentally unkind children and literally nothing I do or say or try works to change that.
I give up.
Like, I know I have to keep parenting, but I surrender. At least for today. Maybe tomorrow.
Why is it the gifts I always think will be a slam dunk to find somehow don't exist? My BFF's daughter (10 in January) is obsessed with horses. I thought a horse snowglobe would be super easy to find and I would have loved it at that age. And I can't really find a pretty one that isn't a carousel horse. Then I thought, well Janie and Jack has a lot of horse-y/equestrian vibe clothes but that might be too young for a 10YO? (ETA: Horses are kind of a joke between us because BFF wants us to move where they are but I argue she should move here so that her DD can have a horse and her DD thinks that is hilarious.)
It's in the low 80s here, which is weird. I went hiking this morning for the first time in months, and I was a lot hotter than I expected. However, it was really pretty out and it was so nice to be out in the woods by myself. For whatever reason the trails were pretty empty so I really felt like I was the only person around. I guess that could be creepy, but I find it very calming. I wouldn't mind having a dog to bring with me, but I really enjoy hiking without other humans.
My friend called today and she and her H are going to fly out here in a few weeks to celebrate her birthday! I am so excited. This has been a good year for visitors - we'll have had 3 OOT visitors this year! Plus we just saw this couple 2 months ago so I'm excited that we'll actually get to see them 2x this year.
blondemoment123, I go to a plaza with a Party City in it often. It is a madhouse there approaching Halloween. It's the only time of year Party City even extends their hours. But the aisles with the non-Halloween stuff are empty.
It was in fact a madhouse! Then DS decided he now wanted a Paw Patrol theme instead of Monster Trucks. 🤦🏼♀️

katfco , I did! I searched snow globes and came up with mostly carousel horses and unicorns but I just searched again using water globe and there were a few other options that came up. I guess I just didn't think it would be that strange of an item to be looking for!
ETA: I also looked at Breyer but their holiday snowglobe is a Pegasus, lol.

LOL, one of my friend’s dad is a huge source of amusement to us b/c he is *constantly* blowing/raking/picking up leaves, and his house backs up to a forest, so it’s never ending!
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
I’m trying to redesign a walk in closet in our family room area into a study lounge for ds1. I don’t want to spend too much money because it will likely be turned back into a closet at some point. DH and I agreed that I would get a desk from ikea, but I’m looking and most of them are above what I was thinking of spending. I’m looking on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist and there are so many IKEA and Wayfair desks that cost as much or more as the ones from the stores.
We are seeing some friends tonight that we haven’t seen in years. H double booked us and said yes to a Halloween Party invite. He had the “great” idea that we would ask our friends throwing the party if we could bring the other friends to the party after we go out to dinner. Yes H, I’m sure that these friends are going to want to go to a random party where we are usually the outsiders because the others have either known each other for many many years or parent kids who went to preschool together. Not to mention that the friends we are going out to dinner with have a teenager and most kids at the party are 10 and under.

Well, another comment on the weather. It’s 82* right now. I am wearing my costume for the ghost tour tonight, but Lordy, I prepped this costume for late October, not June weather. I may melt 😂 I’m just going to not wear the cape, which is my favorite part, but it’s too damn hot.
cville I’m so sorry. I relate to your post so much. Last week was really rough at my house with my teenagers. I’m sure you’re actually crushing it and someday they will appreciate it. Hang in there!
Waiting on DH to get home from picking DS up from art so we can go apple picking. Why does he have no sense of time? We need to leave like now. And it's 80*, WTH October?
I'd better get a cider slushy and fresh donuts
Well I got my slushy and donuts, the orchard was not horribly overrun, and now I'm reading on the porch while Costco birria heats up on the stove for ramen. So overall a good day.
Tomorrow afternoon I'm taking DD and a friend to the mall. I'd normally just drop them off and friend's parents would do pick up, but I'm going to just stay and shop for me.

I think DS is getting sick. 🥴 even at 8 he doesn’t sleep through the night on melatonin. He’s napping for the second time today and keeps complaining he’s tired. No fever or sore throat. Slight congestion, but I don’t think it’s illness as much as allergies. He gets watery eyes and runny nose every fall.
It never fails someone gets ill before we have a gathering. I have supplies to make enough chili for 20 ppl and all the sides/toppings. Most of it will keep or freeze. That’s the plus.
cville parenting sucks. Kids are monsters. You are doing the best can. I hope tomorrow is better

Also. Apparently, it's a thing to give out potatoes during trick or treating. My potato obsessed kid wants to.
I’ve seen the stories about this being a big hit but I could just see me buying a truckload of potatoes expecting delight and then having to figure out what the fuck to do with a box full of spuds.

They will be bought in small quantities here. My kid's friends know she's obsessed and will have a laugh for sure.
