please don't flame me!
My (newly) five year old is OBSESSED with makeup. She has pretend makeup sets and keeps asking for more. She has a little bit of junky makeup my mom bought for her that sometimes we let her wear (at home) and other times she "pretends" with the real makeup. I'd love to get her something better than truly fake plastic she has now but I'm sure if I want her to have real makeup.
Does anyone let their kids wear real makeup for play? Is this crazy? Is there an in between from amazon junk and adult products? I remember wearing wet n wild when I was much older than 5, and have bought ELF for myself in the past. Any suggestions on makeup related gives for a 5 year old?
DD1 is also 5 and interested in makeup. I got her a small kit from Amazon last Christmas. The brand is Klee Kids and it’s natural mineral makeup. It’s a bit messy (the eye shadow is very powdery and easy to spill) but I feel better having her use safe, natural products if she wants to experiment.

My daughters are 5 and 7 and like to play with makeup occasionally. They have kids play sets we got off Amazon that works since they they don't use them that much . But if they were more interested in makeup I'd get some holiday kits from Ulta or Sephora. They have some holiday kits for around $20 that would be perfect. Or just buy individual products of Elf or Wet & Wild. Although I feel like both brands have gotten expensive!

I buy them make up at Ulta. Honestly I like it way better than the play make up stuff. But I don’t let them have free rein over it - they have to ask for it, it’s not accessible to them.
Also, my first grader wants to make up to school and I was a hard no on that.
We also started with the Klee Kids, but I highly recommend getting the version with pressed pans of make up instead of the loose powder.
She’s in third grade now, and she still loves to play with makeup at home. Now she has a few fun eyeshadow palettes and things from regular drug store brands.

At that age, I took my real makeup containers that were almost empty, emptied them out fully and cleaned them, and then dd and I filled them in with nail polish colors that she picked out. I did buy her real makeup brushes for her to use with them. She liked those for a long time until I was ready for her to use real makeup (she did use real make up for dance recitals and she and I would do real makeup 'makeovers' on each other from time to time with her dance make up or my make up rejects, but she wanted her own play stuff she could have unsupervised, and I didn't let her have anything that would make a mess for a long time. She is just now at 12 allowed to have pretty much whatever she wants in terms of makeup).
Ulta has a set that is $20 right now that is great for kids. Just grab anything you don't want her to have out of it. It comes with a storage case and everything.
My sister got them for my DD and my niece one year; we have an epic video of them making a YT style makeup tutorial together on Christmas Day and forcing my nephew (niece's twin) to hold the iPad to film in the mirror.

My newly 7yr old DD LOVES makeup. We play makeover together at least once a week. She has some eye shadow and lip gloss she plays with at home and we let her wear it out to run errands on weekends or play dates, etc. For Christmas I'm getting her some Lip Smackers & Wet & Wild brand stuff. Target has cute ones for pretty cheap. I'd rather real makeup over toy sets since I don't know if those are tested the same way real makeup brands are.
My 6 year and her friends love makeup. She has some more kiddo types and then some legit things (that I sometimes borrow LOL). My only rule is they put them back in her little vanity and have to wash everything off. I keep an extra pack of makeup wipes just for them.

Claire's has a bunch of cute sets that have fun colors. We get DD one every year and I tell her that makeup is for fun at home. She is 10 now and might put on a tinted gloss or blush once in a blue moon to wear out of the house.
