There was also only one employee at the Joann I was at, which did not seem safe. Can the person even go to the bathroom?! In this case, she was on the floor and you were supposed to ring a bell to check out. I rang the bell and waited nearly 10 minutes for the person to come to the check-out counter. I cannot imagine how much shoplifting they must have when even I was half tempted to walk out the door.
I signed up for this service called Trusted Housesitters that connects homeowners with people looking for places to stay. I was thinking that it was a great solution to get a free pet sitter while we go away. Our listing has been live for a couple days and I got one person experiencing homelessness and one person who sounded great in their initial message, but has not responded and now that I take a deeper look at their profile, they look a bit shady.
We used that service back in April/May when went to Europe for 3 weeks. Finding someone was definitely a struggle.
We got about half a dozen people who saved our listing but never messaged us. I had to turn away one couple traveling with a dog (hard pass for our cat), another person with questionable living circumstances who wanted to bring her kid (another hard pass for our house and our cat), and someone else who would have been fine except we live in the 'burbs with basically no public transit and they had a bad ankle and no car.
I also reached out to about a dozen people with good ratings, but they were all either already booked or didn't respond.
We finally landed on a localish couple who contacted us, and who normally lived on a houseboat, but needed to dry dock it for repairs. The guy was great, the woman was a little odd, and they somehow forgot to pick up our mail the entire time we were gone. They were also very sad because our cat is incredibly shy and anti-social, so she mostly hid from them the entire time, and the woman definitely wanted nothing more than to give her all the pets and cuddles.
Overall it was kind of a tedious experience, but it worked out OK in the end. Our house and cat were fine, all our mail was still there stuffed in the box, nothing was broken or stolen, house was reasonably clean when we got home.

Thanks for sharing. My mom has been a housesitter and has had a couple people house sit for her and she’s had great experiences. We live in a pretty desirable location so I thought it would be easy to get someone, but then I noticed there were a few houses around us with “low applications” so we’ll see. I’m already looking at dog boarding alternatives.
I was prepping my cold brew coffee on the counter next to the sink. H walked over and said “can I make a suggestion?” I snapped “what?!l because I knew he was going to tell me to put it in the sink. Sure enough, he told me I needed to do that in the sink because it leave coffee dust on the counter. Which, by the way, I was pouring in the coffee so I didn’t even have a chance to clean up any mess I made. And no, I did not want to set my clean coffee maker jar in the sink with all the dirty dishes and funk that he couldn’t put in the dishwasher (which, was empty, but sink a sink full off his dishes). So this escalated. He “was just making a simple request nicely”. But OMG it was so passive aggressive, which he admits.
This is a long running difference of option between us. He thinks when you pour A into B, B *must* be in the sink. Cloud, coffee, soup, etc. I do not like doing it that was and will clean up any I spill. Why? Because I see sinks as filthy, green encrusted places because he loves to put dishes in there is soak.
And we are currently not speaking. Dinner is getting cold because he turned the stove off and he is pouting in the basement.
We went out for lunch at a local restaurant today. There was an elderly couple at a table next to us and as they were leaving the woman came up to me, put a hand on my shoulder, and said “I heard a lot of laughter coming from your table, you’re doing a good job mom.” It absolutely made my day.
