I am struggling to come up with a big present for ds2. He doesn’t play with toys much anymore and has told us he does not want anymore Legos. He loves scary things, art, and movie making. He has all the art supplies and doesn’t need anything else in that category. I thought I had a brilliant idea to get him a basic GoPro so he could have his own camera and stop using my phone, but H shot me down and I said I would drop the idea. He’s really interested in special effects, but all the accessories for movie making are not for 6 year olds. Anyone have any suggestions.
I’ve looked at those cameras, but the iPhone shoots much better video so I think he’d quickly go back to using my phone and a camera like that would end up in a drawer.
My kids are older - 11, 11, and 9 - but they are obsessed with movie making. They film and edit with their iPads and iMovie.
A cheap green screen from Amazon is a big hit and used a lot. They just drape it over stuff and made a ton of movies with stuffed animals on crazy backgrounds when they were younger. Now they use it for more complicated stuff.
A ring light is fun too. We have one that can change colors so they use it for “special effects.”
This year the big family gift for the three of them to share is movie kit I put together with a couple of Bluetooth clip on mics, a clapboard, a tripod for the iPad, and a stand for the green screen.

Could you just get him an older phone that would be just for him so he stops using yours? Like an iphone from several years ago so he already knows how to use it.
We did something similar for our kids last year because they are always making movies and stop motion videos on my phone. We got them a little digital camera, a laptop that can run editing programs, plus we already have a green screen and lapel microphones and boom mic.
Guess what they use? An old phone of ours. I think they really prefer using the phone because they are used to it, and our DD uses capcut to edit.
A green screen and software could still be cool, the green screen is pretty cheap.
A couple years ago my parents got my kids a kid go-pro like set from Costco. Maybe your DH would be more ok with that as a toy and less costly? A drone is another option (some which have video).
I think it was this one. It has lots of accessories so a kid can play around with it.
