I had this happen and I had to wait a week maybe for them to balance/count the machine. It was super annoying. I’d push higher and higher until you get a resolution.
Basically, the local bank never heard about our incident report. There was no “investigation”. We just got a form letter. We have an actual person who works at the bank to get answers. H is going to escalate forever (he’s pretty hot). He’s also asking the question “what exactly was your investigation??”

Ugh I’m so sorry. This happened to me once. The branch was open so I was able to go right in. They were like “oh yeah we have issues with that ATM”. Greeeeeat. It was a small bank and they said they needed to wait until Brinks came and they got the counts. They gave me the provisional credit and I never heard anything else. But I will never deposit that way again - it’s infuriating.

WTF! I am glad someone is taking care of it now, but how dare they just close the investigation without you know, INVESTIGATING it? I'm angry for you!
Regardless of how this ends up, I think I'd switch banks after this is figured out.
I would absolutely file a complaint with the CFPB after reading that update. Depending on who oversees their charter, a complaint to the state or federal agency (like FDIC) would also be warranted.
Just as an FYI, they are required by regulation (Reg E) to provide you all materials they used to make their "determination", so keep pushing for that as well. Reg E violations by banks is a pretty hot topic and bank examiners and CFPB have been digging into these types of issues.
As PP mentioned, they are required to provide documentation of the investigation upon request, so definitely request that. I'd be curious what they give you.
livinitup , can you let me know if it's the same big bank that I wrote about? I went into the branch after my second incident to complain to the manager. Both incidents happened at the same ATM at the same Bank of America branch. The woman said "I'm the assistant manager" and wouldn't let me speak to anyone else. She didn't seem phased by my complaint but this was also before they took away my provisional credit so I wasn't as mad back then. Now I'm wondering if I also got sent a form letter.
sent It is not Bank of America but it is a national bank. And once this is resolved, H is determined to move to a local credit union. We’ve been banking with them for nearly 20 years. This is such crap.
I feel like banks are pushing everyone towards ATMs. Our local PNC bank has no tellers - not in the drive through or inside. They removed the area where the tellers used to be and now you only go in to talk about your account - no deposits or withdraws. Everything has to be done through the ATM.
I bank with Navy Federal Credit Union, but moved out of the area where there are ANY local branches. Luckily I can do most things through mobile banking, but recently I had a bunch of cash I wanted to deposit into an account. I knew NFCU was 'partners' with some local banks, so I looked that up and went to one and asked to do a deposit, and the teller told me she couldn't do it for me, but I could do it at the ATM. I'm old, and the last time I had made a deposit at an ATM, there were envelopes you had to fill out with your account # and other info. before putting the cash or checks into the machine, and I was looking around for those for a while before I just stuck my card in, thinking maybe it would spit out an envelope for me after I said I wanted to do a deposit. But after I picked deposit cash, I was shocked when it told me to just place the cash in the slot all willy nilly. Luckily for me the deposit went through with no issue, but thanks to this thread I'm going to be wary to deposit cash again ever. I'm going to need to tell my family members to please stop gifting my kids cash...my dad gave them both 50's for Christmas. They both have accounts with mobile banking now and debit cards that they use primarily to make purchases, or I buy things online for them and they 'pay' me with their cash, and then I'm stuck with these 50's or 100's from them that I don't want to use.
We've banked with USAA for over 20 years, and I finally got tired of having to either do everything mobile or via a third party ATM I didn't trust. I opened up a small account (like $250 initial deposit) at a local credit union and we use that for any cash deposits we need to make. I put the money in my account, and if it's for the kids I'll transfer that much from our checking to their account. I have a credit union debit card I use to make purchases for whatever using the cash I deposit--or I treat it like a vacation savings fund--so it all balances out in the end.

Same. I've had USAA since I was old enough to open a bank account. I wanted/ needed a physical bank to deposit cash or whatever so opened an account at my local credit union. It's convienent when I want to cash in DS's piggy bank for him or whatever have you.
I’m glad someone is actually looking in to it for you!
I’ve banked with Capital One 360 (was ING) forever, but will always keep a local b&m for the odd times I need to deposit cash or want specific denominations. I only have $10/pp deposited to keep it active.
livinitup You can also ask for the name and contact of the "regional manager" if you don't get anywhere. Most banks will have a branch manager's manager that will be over 10-30 branches. They are good to get action with.

ATMs suck. As others have said, if it's a third party doing the balancing it may take a bit since some balance out monthly. If it's balanced within the bank, we used to have to do it weekly.
The fact that the acting manager (or whatever) is working on it make me think it is already being escalated internally.
But yeah, keep on it. Credit union ATMs aren't any better, though, fyi (in fact, my specific CU was waaaay worse, lolsob).
estrellita - Bank of America made it clear it's a third party that handles the balancing (or not balancing because where are my checks!!!?) of the drive up ATMs. I will be sure to ask if there are any machines that actual branches still handle.
We had an issue with BOA saying they couldn't read a check I mobile deposited. After many calls a manager told me they actually outsource that. So weird!
I've had so many problems with them we are trying to determine what local bank/CU to switch to. We do have USAA but that doesn't solve the local issue.

I’ve never had an issues with USAA, and I’ve never had any other bank. Although I can’t recall ever having a time where I needed a local bank.
Yay to your 2nd update. Where/if possible, send an email/letter to the bank manager or higher up commending this person’s customer service. They deserve to be recognized for their efforts.
