I need to go to Houston week after next because my sister has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer metastasized to the liver. I’m looking at flights and hotels and I see that the hotels are advertising their distance from HOU. However, the flights from my city are dramatically less expensive if I fly into IAH. Is it reasonable to fly into IAH if my destination is MD Anderson?
IAH is totally fine. Traffic will be terrible either way so just go with what is more convenient for you! The medical center is kind of in between the two airports anyways. Try to go out of terminal B if anyone is picking you up/dropping you off. There is construction making traffic in C and D very unpleasant (there is a train that connects them all).
I’m really sorry to hear about your sister. Our medical center is top notch and she will get great care at MD Anderson. I’ll be thinking of you.
I go to MD Anderson annually and always fly in and out of iah. Like pp, I think Hobby and IAH are 6 one way 1/2 dozen the other in terms of distance, so if the flight costs or availability are better for you at one vs the other, go with that.
I'm sorry to hear about your sister. The drs at MDA have always been awesome for me and I'll be sending thoughts for the same for your sister.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
I’ll echo that IAH is completely fine. The difference is negligible so go with the cheapest. It’s the main airport for all of the large carriers, HOU is smaller and is mainly Southwest.

Thank you for this information! I plan to just Uber from the airport to the hotel.

She’s in Seattle now. My parents are on their way. She’s having some tests and procedures in Seattle and then will head to Houston and I’ll meet her there.
She lives in Alaska and I begged and pleaded with her to come home after Houston. She said she’d consider it. I loathe the idea of her dying without us by her side.
My 74 year old mother has stage 4 breast cancer and will likely outlive my sister.
wambam, ::Hugs:: I'm certainly not an expert or anything, but I've stayed in the area around there--doing hotels, air-b & b, etc...I know the restaurants and grocery stores. I used their travel system to book things--if you had questions about just--what it's like, I'm happy to chat. Saying "It's a lot" is underserving--but it's the baseline of the shitshow. I'm sorry.
My heart goes out to you and your family. Like others said, most people fly into IAH even thought it’s a little further from Med Center. Let me know if you need any advice on specific areas for hotels. There’s some options around Med Center / NRG stadium but the Museum District, Galleria, Downtown/ Theater District are all pretty close.
I found out I was BRCA2+ when I lived in Houston and saw amazing, compassionate providers at MD Anderson who were so connected and communicative with each other (and now I go to an MD Anderson affiliated oncology center in my current city). They will take excellent care of her. There’s a history of breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer in our family which are all related to the same genetic mutation.

Hugs to your sister. I don't know about MD Anderson specifically, but be sure to connect with the social workers there. In addition to the support they provide in the hospital setting they may be able to help your sister and you with hotel discounts and assistance with food and gas and those sorts of things. Good luck to you both.
Thanks for the help everyone. This situation is turbulent and changing every hour, seems like. She may not be headed to Houston. Maybe NYC. Not sure, but we’ll have to decide by tomorrow.
