Clearly I have no idea how health insurance in this country works. I just switched from an HMO to a HDHP the beginning of the month. Both my daughter and I take an Rx every month so I was worried about the new cost was going to be. I was paying $20 each per month and with the HDHP it's less than $5 each. What? How? I'm so confused. I thought it would be significantly more now having HDHP, but's less?
I woke up at 5am because my throat hurt so bad, like I had swallowed glass. I called out of work, took some ibuprofen and slept til 10:30. Then my daughter texted that she felt sick and came home from school. Ugh.

Ugh I hope you feel better quickly but that’s a sure fire sign I have strep when I feel that way.
To follow up from yesterday (cc @ litskispeciality). I got all over confident when I got a referral from my EAP so easily. Apparently, it’s not cross referenced with accepting new patients. So I have spent on and off today looking through the list of options, calling, confirming they are not accepting new patients. And then getting frustrated. So, I’m 24 hours post finally deciding I will do something about therapy and no closer to having an appointment.
The last time I did this (2005ish), the EAP picked someone and even scheduled that first appointment. And this has been so frustrating.
I did some work with an acquaintance and she sends me checks with my share of the profits. One time the check she sent was written in purple magic marker and the bank had to make an exception to deposit it since it bled through the back.
I asked if she could try to use blue/black ink instead and ever since she’s been using a manual typewriter to write them out. Which seems extreme and pointed but works!
But really, marker? She’s in her 40s so I’d think she’d know how to write a check.
I can't decide if this is fantastic or frightening. LOL Rolling a iittle check into the typewriter!! It's like she's paying them back for not appreciating her fabulous purple marker!
I need to drop this somewhere and this is as good a place as any. I'm convinced something is up with my dad's health. He had prostate cancer several years ago which was treated successfully. Last time we saw them at Christmas he looked so much more his age (74) than he used to. I noticed a few weeks ago he had "bloodwork" on his calendar and "surgery Blake" exactly three weeks later. These appeared after xmas or I would have brought it up then. It could be something simple but my instincts are saying no. My mom was instant on dinner soon so we'll see them this Sunday. When I was looking at the calendar they are having lunch with my dad's sister on Friday, which isn't unusual per-say but it only happens a few times of year so the timing (before sugary) is notable. They have also planned a trip out to see my brother. He's in TX, we're in MD. They visit usually twice a year, but whats unusual here is that they planned it on short notice (within the last week). My dad does not do last minute trips. I have never known him to not plan trips two months or more out. They were just there at the beginning of November, and my brother came here for Thanksgiving. Seeing them again, also before the surgery on the calendar is notable.
I'm 95% sure something is going on. My family of origin is utter shit when it comes to talking about these things. And for those of you who will say "just call and ask," I can't and that's something I'm working on with my therapist. I'll find out on Sunday, but I needed to type this out/talk about it somewhere.
Family health problems, especially in families that tend to keep things private until there's no other option, suck. I hope everything is okay with your dad, mala , but coming from a family that treats illnesses similarly I empathize with the suspecting/knowing/not being able to ask dynamic.
In very related news, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer today. H and I knew she was getting a biopsy after a bad mammogram result, but my parents didn't. I'm honestly scared to call my mom even though I know she'd appreciate it.
ETA: my sister told my parents herself about her diagnosis today.
mala, I hope it’s nothing and just follow up lavenderblue, it would be awesome if they had calculators where you could input that stuff wouldn’t it? If it was a true HMO plan there were probably access fees or the HDHP was incented thru RX. It’s all so complicated.
Hugs to you, mala and nsl. For what it's worth, nsl, I don't think it's your place to tell your mom about your sister's diagnosis (if that's what you mean by "call" her). It's hard to keep that kind of secret though.

Thank you. Sorry if my OP wasn't clear--my sister told my parents today about her diagnosis. I'm avoiding calling my mom to talk about how we're dealing with it.

That is exactly my reaction too! I don’t know her very well but did she already have the typewriter?! Did she need to buy a ribbon? It’s an involved response.

Uuugh rubytue,. I truly understand that mental health is one of the most overworked, understaffed (at least in my area) industries right now, but it takes so much courage and time to get started that doing all of that just to have to do your own leg work *almost* isn't worth the trouble. I hope you can find something asap.
I got a call back from my EAP, who thankfully are 24/7. I have to do another intake so I have to call back when I can find up to 1 hour to be on the phone, hopefully then they'll schedule me for an appointment. I should actually clarify that before I do the intake, if they can't schedule me I'll skip the intake. I understand why you have to do them, I've even read a post about it on another thread. I just don't have time to be on the phone for an hour even if it's after work. Maybe if I didn't do all the stuff through my PCP therapy office only to start over so quickly, but we need do have an online survey or something to cut down at least some of the work.*
*You don't need to tag me and explain the benefits of the intake by phone, Zoom or in person, I get it.
