We’re at the beach. We went to a used book/ toy store and gave the kids each a 20. I got a delicious latte while they shopped and now we’re back at the house and I’m relaxing while they play. Best $40 I’ve spent. 😂
Ultimately the good news is that we don't need a new freezer, but the bad news is that we have to toss everything and replace a bunch of stuff we always have on hand like butter and the aforementioned Hot Pockets. I'm not looking forward to this week's grocery bill.
Serious question. Do you have to toss hot pockets and butter? I’d just refreeze everything except probably raw meat. Is that wrong?

You're probably right that the hot pockets and butter could have been saved. I'm not one of those "would you eat this" posters, though, and H is kind of a nut about food temperatures.

We have a basement fridge (that was here when we moved in), and if you shut the fridge door too hard, the freezer door pops open a little bit. Since the basement is my kids' area and they are often getting drinks out of that fridge and not realizing the freezer was left slightly open, we deal with this often. I rarely toss anything. I tend to keep a loaf of bread on the door, and that is often the thing that is most defrosted. We've also had popsicles in the front that completely melted and then re-froze. I've stopped keeping raw meat in there, but when I did, it was in the way back, and it would often still be frozen solid if I caught the door being open in time. But now I just keep leftovers (which if they thaw I bring upstairs to the main fridge and eat soon), things like garlic bread, which is fine IMO to refreeze, the aforementioned loaf of bread and popsicles, and then also bags of french fries and stuff like that that is cooked but frozen, and I've refrozen and used those without issue.

Agreed. nsl, it sounds like it may be too late, but meat would be the only thing I’d toss (and if it was still cold, I’d actually make every effort to just cook it up, depending how much there was…)
I'm on the hunt for the perfect-for-me-unicorn travel backpack, and as such, ALL of my Facebook ads are now travel related products: luggage, magnetic stacking liquid containers, wool clothing, etc. I mean, it could be worse, but targeted advertising is weird man.
Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a backpack that's roughly school bag sized, has a luggage sleeve/passthrough, stretchy water bottle pockets, isn't ugly AF, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'm open to suggestions. (Basically I want this one by Jansport, but smaller). I've found a couple that meet my demanding requirements, but they are more than I want to spend, or fall into the ugly category.
I also need to get off my duff and make pretzel buns here in a little bit. We're having leftovers tonight, but if I make the pretzel buns today, I get to see how my new special pretzel salt lasts overnight, and I won't have to hand wash the pan I need for both boiling the pretzels and for making the soup tomorrow.

Nonny, I don’t know what price your looking at, but this is the backpack I have for travel. I love it. It’s perfect - not too big, I can fit everything I need to in it, two decent expandable water bottle pockets. I hate backpacks in general and think they are all ugly AF, but this one isn’t too bad, lol.

Our garage fridge does this. I got the fridge lock from the childproofing section at Target so the freezer won't open by accident. It was cheap and works well.

I have a backpack from eagle creek that I’ve been liking for travel. I know you mentioned that you want something smaller than the Jansport - but I see it’s 30L which I find isn’t as big as I think it’s going to be so might be worth trying.

I really want to keep it to about $100 or under. I have a different Jansport that's a basic school bag (but with a laptop sleeve) and it's definitely not cute, but I like that it's light weight and unstructured (so more squishable under an airline seat as a personal item, since I generally don't fly with my laptop anyway). But after throwing out my back the last day of our trip last year, I've come to the realization that a luggage sleeve is now a necessity for plane travel.

Well, I want it as a personal item, so I want it on the small side to 1) keep it small enough to smoosh under an airplane seat, and 2) to keep myself from stuffing it too full. LOL!
I generally use it for: meds, electronic cables/headphones, snacks, liquid toiletries, and then I throw in my purse, and sometimes roll up my coat and stuff in there too. It's mostly to just keep my hands free and keep the things that a credit card won't fix if I have to check my carry on and things were to go awry.
Although looking at the closest approximation of my current backpack, it's probably 28L, so you're right that it's not too far off.

I have one from lululemon that I really like. The water bottle sleeve isn’t stretchy, but I’ve never had an issue. I put my water bottle on one side and an umbrella on the other.
I love that selling cookies is a chance to teach DD early all the entrepreneurship stuff I had to learn on my own after age 30 and still struggle to figure out. Simple things like tracking money, tracking inventory, making small talk about your product with customers (who are basically strangers), etc. Higher level lessons would include making the best out of the conditions you are dealt (the weather has been really cold this year), advertising, presentation (like what you wear) and neatness of the cookie table. The cookies are colorful and practically sell themselves. So many lessons to learn!
DD gets so mad at me. I swear I am trying to do the whole "This is how math applies to real life in a fun way!" theme here. She refuses to express in words why she's pissed, just that she is.
I know I'm not the worst mom that she thinks I am. But these kids are really pushing my limits. I can only hope that this is one of those moments where you look back and realize that your mom being the worst was actually her trying to set you up for the best.

I mostly just want a stretchy side pocket because I generally prefer the profile of the bags with side pockets that lay flat. I probably won't even use it 50% of the time.
I took the day off tomorrow to do something fun with the kids on their day off. One now has a 103 fever and the other is sniffling and coughing like crazy, so that’s not happening. I leave for a work trip across the world in five days. I cannot get sick!
Last night I chopped 3-4 inches off my hair (which neither DH nor DS seemed to notice), and my hair is currently being home-dyed, in early preparation for our vacation that’s a week from Friday (it was in bad need of a dye).
Everyone was occupied today so I read a good 200 pages of my book, which was lovely. Then I made myself a couple of cosmos while making dinner (which was also lovely).
Tomorrow DS and I are off, but DH has to work, so that will make for a nice quiet day.

For a truly random I'm bitter at getting skunked out of having broccoli with dinner.
For context, what I'd consider "normal" greens for a meal are broccoli, green beans, spinach. They are fairly exotic here I can get so many green leafy though, so it's not a hardship, but sometimes I want the familiar.
I was excited to see 3 head of broccoli, so I turned to get the baggie. This is unfortunately necessary as you must bag and they weigh and tag before checkout, and the woman next to me took all 3. I've never felt so sad at losing a veg.
Tell that to your kids if they whine about veg, that a woman on the internet was so sad at not having broccoli she had to share her disappointment.
I might have found it elsewhere, but fresh markets had closed and the only other supermarket has instituted a ridiculous pay parking scheme so I'm boycotting. So I bought "french" beans which are not hericot verts but just regular every day green beans. And of course that's tasty, but it's the damn principle, and I'll forever be mad at that woman. She knew what I was wanting

My dad had an emergency foot amputation on Friday. I am a mess. He has dementia and doesn't understand what is happening. Today I fought back tears as he kept asking me "Why is one foot bigger than the other?" My mom is sick with strep throat so she can't go see him. I am so scared; it's awful.
He hasn't been home in a month because of this awful infection that took over his foot. He is diabetic. Since the beginning of this whole mess, so many medical professionals have failed him. It isn't fair.
At work I am dealing with someone who doesn't appreciate me at all. My boss stands up for me though, which is great. My father and my mental health come before the needs of this person.
Nonny, I just bought this one and really like it. Technically it is a hiking backpack, but it worked well for a recent trip. I use it all the time because it’s so lightweight.
We had our dryer repaired a few months ago and it just started doing the same thing again, making this loud clunking sound when it’s running. Since the set was used when we bought it (and I’ve hated them since we got them) I decided we’re not repairing them again.
We were looking at some specific sets online. I decided to go to World Market and there happened to be a Conn’s next door, so I went ahead and popped inside. They had one of the sets we were interested in, for about $100 more than what we were seeing online. But apparently that location is closing and when I expressed interest, the guy said he’d sell it to me for 20% off and when I called H, he amended it to 30% off and then ended up just knocking it down another $40. Even with delivery and taxes and the hook up stuff, we got it for less than the base price at most retailers.

On the one hand I totally get the emotional attachment to "foods from home" and understand being bummed. On the other, the fact that you posted twice about the broccoli situation is both cracking me up and making me worry a bit that you forgot your first post from hours earlier.
melmel4854, look into an organization called Wiggle Your Toes. It is local to me in MN but I think they have people scattered throughout the US. They are a wonderful resource for amputees.

melmel4854, The guy that started the org was in an accident and ended up as a bilateral above knee amputee. He was kind of lost with the process of prosthetics because he got thrown into the situation, so he started the org to help others navigate the process of amputation and prostheses. Was it his whole foot? Or just partial foot? (you can PM me if you want too. I work in the field of braces and know a little about prosthetics)
