H and I are having friends (and their kids) over for dinner tonight. We haven't had them over since October due to sickness and traveling so I'm really looking forward to it.

I need to get moving. Sunrise is at 7:05 now, so I really should be at the dog park with Pippin. Sigh. We like to go before other people are there because neither of us like other people. Haha
DS is having his bday party. We need to clean up a bit when I get home. DH is taking him and his friend to a bounce place for a few hours. DD decided to go to a friend’s house tonight, so I might have a few hours to myself!

Goooood morning!
I kind of assumed that Lucy’s drawing class this morning would be canceled since it’s snowing but alas, no. H and I flip flopped- I usually drive her there and he picks her up. Today I’m going to get her and drop her off at a friends house. She’s gonna be gone til tonight. And my GOD do I need a break from her. She’s an intense kid. And being her person is hard work. I’m sure she will still text me incessantly but still. Whew
It snowed again- not enough to play in really, but enough to be annoying. I’m very ready for spring.
Our friends that we usually climb with are out of town, so we’re climbing tomorrow instead. That plus the weather means we’re turning today into a cleaning spree. I just made a list of what needs to happen in each room and it is long. My kids are going to be so pissed. lol
Maybe I’ll bribe them with a trip to Reading Terminal Market for lunch.

I transition between work and my home office pretty much daily. I keep forgetting to switch my dongle out. Is there a solution where one dongle will work with my both my home and work keyboard and mouse? This is minor, but it would improve my life and take trying to remember something off my plate.

I bought the exact same keyboard and mouse for work and home and I'm pretty sure I can use the same dongle interchangeably. But I'm not 100% sure because I use docking stations. So that would be the other solution - get docking stations (but they are expensive).

I just have two totally separate sets of mice/keyboards. I have a docking station in both locations and the dongle stays in the respective docking station.
For travel, I have a Bluetooth mouse that I keep in my travel backpack.
So I’d consider that approach because it means all you’re taking back and forth is your laptop.
My heart is breaking. My dad (with Alzheimer’s) hurt my mom a few weeks ago and wandered off. Police had to be called and he’s been in the hospital psych ward since.
Doctor deemed him unsafe to go home, but 16 Longterm/memory care centers have denied him admission because of the violence incident. Only 1 accepted him and it’s a bad facility with multiple health violations and a 1 star rating with Medicare.gov.
On Tuesday Medicare is cutting off coverage for him to stay in hospital and he has to go home (against medical advice) or be transferred to the substandard facility.
I’ve been living on their couch trying to help my mom who’s okay but healing an injured shoulder. Despite a million phone calls, visits, lawyer meetings, and working with our state’s Omsbudsman, we’re at the end of the line of options.
There’s one more decent home who hasn’t rendered a decision yet, so If anyone has any positive thoughts to spare, please send them our way.
I slept poorly and feel like I'm getting sick--yesterday I thought it was just allergies--so I'm very grateful that we didn't make any plans for the weekend. Probably going back to bed soon because I feel like I could sleep another few hours even though I only got up 90 minutes ago. I definitely need to test for Covid. Blech.
shortstax, I am so sorry. That is horrible that there is no solution! What do they expect people to do? I understand wanting to keep staff/residents safe, but you'd think they'd have some expertise in dealing with dementia related violence since I'm sure that's not uncommon. I hope that last facility accepts him - keeping your family in my thoughts.
As a midwesterner living in the mid-Atlantic, I both love and hate how much things get cancelled with a little bit of snow. I am mildly irritated that my massage for this afternoon got cancelled - the roads look completely fine and the massage therapist and I live in the same town (and not far from the studio) so I am pretty sure it would have been safe to keep the appointment. We also cancelled with the dog trainer, which makes a little more sense to me because she lives further away. Really I was just looking forward to a massage so I'm sad, lol. But I also don't hate that I have an excuse to not leave the house today. Of course, I've barely left the house since last Saturday so that may not be a great thing!
I am going to see a play with a friend tomorrow so at least I have something to look forward to this weekend. That also means I should use today to take care of some things.

shortstax are these all freestanding memory care centers or are they nursing homes with locked units for patients with dementia? Actual memory care facilities should be used to aggression is only reason I ask. Any facilities in surrounding towns? I'm so sorry for all this stress.
It’s February break week for the kids so we flew to the Midwest this morning to do a week of college tours for DS1. My 11 year old is not thrilled with this vacation lol
And we found out today DS1 got into a summer college program he wanted so that’s awesome. But another week he will now be away our last summer together before college 😥
shortstax, I am so sorry that you're dealing with all of this. Dementia is challenge enough without behavior issues as part of the presentation.
I do wonder if the information about Medicare "not paying" under these circumstances is accurate or not. I belong to an Alzheimer's/Dementia Support Board for caregivers and your situation comes up a lot. The Alzheimer's Assn has a 24/7 hotline that might be able help you. The number is 800.272.3900; if you call asked to be transferred to a specially trained care consultant.
We had similar issues with my dad. Meds really helped a lot, but it was difficult until we got his cocktail tweaked. Progression of the disease helped too-- he became less able to act on his impulses as his cognition slipped. When it came time to place dad, mom's first choice option refused him placement. We found 2 places willing to give dad a try-- one was a free-standing memory care facility operated by ProMedica under the name "Arden Courts" which operates in a few states around the country. Other people on the board I visited had success with their difficult-to-place loved ones in other locations. Downside is that they don't accept Medicaid if that'll be an issue at some point. Many corporate facilities cherry pick their residents for only the pleasantly befuddled. The other place willing to take dad was the state VA nursing home. Downside here was that they only take vets/spouses of vets and that they have a 3-4 month waiting list which is common for these types of places.

shortstax, I'm sorry, that sounds so hard. I hope you are able to find an acceptable solution.
We got a bunch of snow last night, and I was hoping the kids would go out and play for a while instead of spending all day on screens, but they went out for all of 10 min. and were like, this snow sucks, it's too fluffy to sled in and it blows all over.

Does anyone grow strawberries in their home gardens? I’m thinking of adding some in my backyard this year, but trying to figure out if they’re as fussy as the internet grow guides have led me to believe.

I do and they are extremely low maintenance. I literally do nothing to them and they come back with a vengeance every year. The only issue is that usually the squirrels get to them before I can.

I've tried for several years. Container gardens, raised beds. Fenced in, netted. Doesn't matter. They get chewed down to the roots every time by assorted creatures. I gave up and planted raspberries and blackberries and have had much better luck. I planted a blueberry twig of a bush last year and am hoping it will grow over time.

Oh, shortstax. That’s so hard. Have you reached out to the Alzheimer’s Association at all to see if you can get connections to local resources that could help?

I prefer raspberries and blackberries, but my kids love the strawbs. But I battle squirrels on everything 😩 maybe we’ll just get some canes and see how those do. I’ll get thorned varieties and enjoy knowing the squirrels are poking themselves to eat them, lol.
wildrice, so much was canceled today. Most made the call yesterday when it was a 4-6” forecast. And then we woke up to wet streets. 🤷♀️ I’m not minding too much. I have an annoying, non-Covid so far, cold. So sitting at home doing nothing is fine. Or, nothing more than laundry lol And I might should go clean the kitchen.

Ours grow like weeds and I've confined them to a small raised bed for that reason. We don't have a big problem with critters getting at them, but for some reason the deer don't like our neighborhood and our 6" fences seem to keep the rabbits out. The squirrels are too busy stealing my tomatillos every summer to bother with the berries.
