Has anyone read The underground Library by Jennifer Ryan yet? I really want to read it for spring break (I am off work AND college this week so I want to do some good reading) but it won’t be my turn at the library till summer. Trying to decide if I should just splurge and buy it.
I just finished Under The Dome by Stephen King, which I loved, and today I started Fudge Cupcake Murder by Joanna Fluke (it’s from 2004). These two books are…very different from one another 😂

I still think about Under The Dome sometimes because I loved it so much and I read it in 2010! Lol

I’m a lifelong SK fan and there are many novels of his that I still sometimes think about - I’m guessing this will end up being another of one those for me!

I'm reading 3 books at the same time - The 3 Body Problem (struggling through this as it keeps jumping timelines and I can't keep it straight), The Memory Thieves (part of the Marvellers Series) which is a fun read and Recursion which I didn't like at first but which I'm enjoying further into it.

I’m reading The Women by Kristin Hannah and I’m so annoyed. This book started out as a 5* read and I’m about 80% in and I just want to chuck my Kindle across the room. I’ll finish it, but, man, what a disappointment this is turning out to be.
ETA - okay, finished it. 3* because it was definitely a page turner, but it wound up being super contrived and predictable and I rather hated the romantic entanglements. It felt like a soap opera at times.
I want to read a book that delves more deeply into the experiences of the women nurses who served because that is the book I wanted to read. I would also read a book just about Barb (but preferably written by someone else lol).
I just finished The Heavens by Sandra Newman. So, so, so good! I can’t believe I slept on it when it came out. Definitely one of my favorite books of the last few years.

I just finished Cradle of the Reich (4*) and The Last Days of Night (3.5*). I'm just starting Pachinko, which I know is older, while I wait for a few books to come in from the library.

I know that March is almost over, but I still wanted to participate. I tend to read less for entertainment and more for knowledge. Like the last book I read was The Book of Boundaries by Melissa Urban. I just started Turning Inward yesterday by Ross Rayburn.
That said, I wanted to start reading more for pleasure as well and recommended to our Culture Committee that we should have a book club and the idea has taken off. This month we are reading The Alice Network by Kate Quinn.

This is my main gripe with KH. Her books start out so strong, she a good writer and a great storyteller and she works very hard to make things historically accurate. But she always ALWAYS shoehorns in some stupid, vapid, unnecessary romance and ruins the books for me. Every time. I actually find it insulting that she feels we as women are incapable of enjoying a book without something related to romance.

YES. And in this particular book, it wasn’t necessary. It would have been a much more powerful story to focus on Frankie grappling with all of the valid and heart-wrenching emotions following the war without going all Legends of the Fall and throwing in all sorts of romantic tragedies on top of things. Plus the really dumb plot twists completely undermined the idea that women are strong, capable, and made significant contributions to their country too.
Just writing this out makes me want to take it down to 2* lol.

I’m chuckling bc my hairstylist and I always discuss books when we’re together and he had this on his list. We’ve talked about KH and he knows my issue - he actually texted me on the middle of the night in a fit of rage when he finished this book saying how right I am! He said the same thing - it was completely unnecessary.
It reminds me of how Disney always had their princesses have a love interest as a plot point. It is not needed for an empowering story! If they can get it, surely she can. 🙄

Ok, I was just coming in here to say exactly this. I'm 66% of the way through it rn and it was so heavy but I feel like the book fell apart after Frankie came home. I'm sick of reading about a dark haired man with green eyes, lol. I want the history without the romance.
I'm still going to finish because it's still grabbing me, but bleck.

I finished this book over the weekend and feel the same way! I loved the first half of the book. And there were so many things that were so predictable with the romantic relationship in the book. We didn't need that at all!

For a book entitled “The Women,” it sure did focus a lot on the men.
I’m so fired up now, I just changed my rating to 2* on Goodreads.

Every single accomplishment or milestone was driven by or marked by a man. Every. single. one. 🙃🙃🙃

Is this a Kristin Hannah thing? I read The Great Alone last week, my first book from KH. Loved most of the book.... until I got to the last 50 pages or so. It was so rushed, the writing style felt like it was done by a completely different author. The majority of the book was a thought provoking book, dealing with DV, survival in Alaska, and characters dealt with life altering tragedies. Then it's quickly wrapped up in a (IMO unrealistic) happy ending.

It is a KH thing, but I think its most egregious in The Great Alone. That ending went completely off the rails, and I agree, it felt like a completely different author.

Ugh I'm still in a reading funk. I got halfway through John Stamos's book "If You Would Have Told Me", and now I have to wait for it to come back off hold.
I just started "The Block Party" and 50 or so pages in it's pretty good, I'm really enjoying the story.
The Great Alone is what sealed the deal for me. II LOVED the book until it was highjacked by whatever the hell that ending was. If any situation is personified by that Joe Pesce “WTF is this piece of shit” meme is that book ending.
