I'm struggling to understand the second option. M represents 1000 in Roman numerals. But MM? Where does that come from? I guess it's supposed to be 1000 x l000, but that then takes it away from my Roman numerals theory...

It depends on if I'm writing in English or Spanish. The first option in English, second in Spanish. I don't know if that's relevant to your work situation.
Because I work for a stupid company that stupidly uses M/MM because we are stupid, and have had to convert to that, but I have to remember to use k/M when I email clients, because NO ONE WITH ANY SHRED OF SANITY USES M/MM, but frequently forget and then look stupid there too.

I'm dead. You are smarter than me. DD is hitting exponentials in math and we've now reached the point where I admit that I am not smarter than a fifth grader.

Oh, that makes sense. I was trying to think where M/MM came from, but Latin/Spanish, yeah, I can see that. I'd also buy M*M.
$1 in Vietnamese dong is about 25,000. Looking at menu prices really threw me because they often list all the zeros on menus. I don't care if it's k or M or MM, use wingdings for all I care. I just can't handle all those zeroes.

To be fair, that’s not exactly right either but you get the gist. 🤣
“Personally” I use k and write out million. I’m not writing that very often though.
Work is a mess. We’re global and utilize 4 currencies on the regular. I have to take what people all across the globe tell me and put into our pricing system.
Many countries use a comma where we use a period. Some of the code is written to imply decimals, some is not. Then of course there’s the conversions, but not when pricing via bps is involved.
I’ve learned to write everything in not only numerical form but also written or we could have a hell of a mess on our hands.
