We’re 99.995% in place already, will scout our exact location down the road in the next day or so. Should be a group of nine of us. Planning for a little picnic, already have the Capri Suns, Sun Chips, Moon pies, Milky Ways, Starburst (all the necessities 😉). The eclipse music set list is ready from 2017. I’m checking the weather approximately every ten minutes 🤣 and hoping those damn clouds disappear.
We can see the Purkinje effect as the quick change in darkness affects rods and cones. Red will appear to become muted and green and purple will appear to become more vibrant. We intend to test this with different articles of clothing. www.space.com/colors-will-look-different-during-april-8-eclipse
I’m not sure what kind of pictures we’ll take - last time a friend snapped one every few minutes from the same spot to show unfiltered progression of the light; I took one of my kids with their mouths open in awe. I’ve seen to look at leaves and try pinhole shots, but we’ll see. My sis is the photog of our group and I’m sure she’ll have some good ideas.
If you plan to see it, do you have anything in particular planned?

We live where the eclipse will be 94%, which is not good enough for us, so we are driving to Indianapolis. I’m so excited! We will wear green and red for the Purkinje effect and are bringing a colander and moon/sun-themed snacks (along with our glasses, obvs.)
Originally we were going to drive back after the eclipse but tales of 13-hour drives had us book another hotel for Monday night about an hour out of Indianapolis. (Our existing hotel was trying to charge us an additional $500 for the extra night. No, my friends.)
This was my list from 2017. At least Dua Lipa - Houdini is another add since then…
Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, Walking on Sunshine by Katarina and the Waves, Moonshadow by Cat Stevens, Best Day of my Life by American Authors, Brighter than the Sun by Colbie Caillat, I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff, Bad Moon Rising by CCR, Can't Fight the Moonlight by Leann Rhimes, Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John, The House of the Rising Sun by the Animals, Walking on the Sun by Smashmouth, Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles, Moon Moon Moon by Laurie Berkner, Sunshine on my shoulders by John Denver, Moondance by Van Morrison, Rocket Man by Elton John, You are the Sunshine of my Life by Stevie Wonder, Drops of Jupiter by Train, Cheap sunglasses by ZZ Top, Swinging on a Star by Bing Crosby, Sky full of stars by Coldplay, When the Stars go Blue by Tim McGraw, Stars by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Counting Stars by One Republic, Sunnier Days by Diego Garcia, Across the Universe by the Beatles, Black Sun by Death Cab for Cutie, Talking to the Moon by Bruno Mars, You are my sunshine - Elizabeth Mitchell version, Fly me to the moon by Frank Sinatra, Man on the Moon by REM, Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield, When the Sun Goes Down by Kenny Chesney, Eclipse by Pink Floyd, Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest, Sunshine of Your Love by Cream, Fly Me to the moon - Christian McBride, Waiting for a star to fall - boy meets girl, Soak up the sun - Sheryl Crow, Sunrise - Norah Jones
I feel woefully unprepared now. We're planning to drive from Boston up to northern NH Sunday morning and stay over for one night, driving back after the eclipse. My H is going to be pretty annoyed with me if the drive is extended by multiple hours, because he's come around to the idea but didn't want to go in the first place!
Knowing my family (including the ring leader, yours truly), we'll be doing well if we remember the glasses and actually find a decent place to park. Playlists and themed snacks are unlikely to happen, but I'm still excited!
underwaterrhymes, just out of curiosity, how long would it typically take you to get home from Indy?

We live in the path of totality (Indiana), so just sitting out on our patio. Getting groceries today as they are predicting as many if not more people in the area as we had when the Super Bowl was in Indy in 2012. We've been strongly encouraged not to drive anywhere Monday and to expect cell service to be wonky.

From what I can find we will have 99% coverage in Michigan. So I will just go outside to see it. My kids school district is giving our solar glasses to all student and staff which I thought was cool.
Saying all that, there is a chance we won’t have the greatest weather that day. Womp womp.
We were supposed to drive up to Stowe for a long weekend but cancelled when MH started a new job. It's probably just as well because we were going to stay at a friend's campground, which is currently covered in a foot plus of snow!
If I am in the office Monday I will just go to the roof of the parking garage and settle for a partial eclipse.

Pilsy, we live north of Chicago up by the WI border. Driving down, I expect it will take us 3 1/2 - 4 hours. We have been told driving back right after the eclipse would take between two and three times the drive down. (The 13 hour drive was someone who drove back to the Chicago area, but further south than us, from Carbondale.)

Thank you!
I'm gently preparing my husband now. lol
People are serious about this lol. I’ve seen people in an eclipse FB group I’m in talk about bringing a bucket lined with trash bags and a pan of kitty litter because the traffic is at a standstill.
We live in the path of totality (Buffalo) so we'll be staying local. I'm not planning to drive anywhere because I'm sure traffic will be a nightmare. H took the day off and I'm planning to work a half day. Most/all schools around here are closed. We're about 2 miles from one of the Olmstead Parks, so we might ride our bikes and pack a picnic. But they are blocking off the fields/grass and asking people not to go on them due to all the rain we've had since the ground is soft. I think it will be a shit show.
I am borrowing my dad's 300mm lens and ordered a solar filter, so I'm hoping to get some pics. I have a DSLR that I rarely use, so I'm no expert... just read a few tutorials and chatted with a friend who is really into photography.
The weather here is actually supposed to be decent. Few clouds and almost 60. After the week of rain and waking up to snow today, I'm pleasantly surprised.
I feel like I should be doing more. I homeschool, FFS. I just can't get it up for this, though, but I know I should because it's a Big Deal Educational Experience.
We have glasses, and will probably grill out (we live in 99%). We've read a few articles and might watch a book reading or short documentary this weekend.
I think I'm just burned out right now. But that shouldn't affect my kids' experience, so I'm trying to muster up some excitement.

13 hour drives is insane. I think we have about an hour-90 minutes to go to totality? I’ll just walk home, it’s fine.
For those who aren’t going to totality, we were in the 97-98% band last time around, and it was really neat. One of the things that stuck out to me was the shadows. Don’t forget to look down!

This is pretty cool. You can put in your zip code and see what it will look like from where you are. We are 91.7% in my area, so although it will still be cool here, I’m so glad we are making the drive.
I live in area of totality. So we will be watching from our yard. Schools are closed. All my kids sports/activities are cancelled. They keep warning about traffic. So we will just stay home all day. I’m not really that into this. We have eclipse glasses and will go outside but definitely not planning anything. I’m mostly curious to hear how busy/crazy traffic actually gets around here.
Thanks for that, underwaterrhymes! We're at 94%. DS is getting dismissed at 12:45 so we'll get him and just watch from our backyard. Maybe I'll make a playlist, yours is awesome minzy! My school (a cyber school) is dismissing early so kids can watch it, but not til 2:35 which I am annoyed about because at least in my area I think this is supposed to begin around 2pm? I guess I'll be in the backyard with my laptop or at least signed into Teams on my phone, blah.
underwaterrhymes that’s a great link! At home we’ll get 97% so that’s cool. I bought a 5 pack of glasses so that my H can take the rest to his office and share with his guys because I know none of them are prepared.
It’s about 88% here. In 2017 I went to a total spot, because my hometown was in the middle of the path. Wins all around. I know I still have my camera filter, hoping there are glasses still in the same spot. If not, meh. Im working, but am at home day. I blocked off my calendar. Oh, and a friend is coming over to do some painting for me, no idea if it will be the same time, but probably.
I think we are at about 98%. Our plan was to drive to Toledo, Ohio to see it (about an hour south of us) My husband didn't take off work because "it's just an afternoon right?". I tried explaining that no, this is not zip down to Toledo and right back. Has he been under a rock? He has not sat with me to plan it out, or discuss where we're going to go. When I bring it up he says we'll figure it out later.
So I'm kind of hoping we cancel the whole thing and just stay home. I'm a little bit tired of his whole "la la la, I don't plan anything I just show up without knowing anything and then act surprised by the chaos" way of life, after a quick trip to Universal Studios last month, he is on my damn nerves. DS has no school Monday so we could just watch it from the yard.
My area will be about 98%. H and I both work from home, so we'll get glasses and pop out around the peak. Our library is out of glasses, but H said he saw some at the gas station, so I asked him to grab some next time he's there.
DD was in 1st grade for the last total eclipse that came through. She's in 7th now - the school has a whole plan in place for the kids to get to go out and see the eclipse before they dismiss for the day.
DS was in preschool the last time, so he missed it bc nap time lol. Now in 3rd, the school is making a whole thing about it so they can sit outside and see it. I love it for both of them!!
I’m so excited it’s almost here. I went to Tennessee in 2017 to see it and heading to Upstate NY from Sunday until Tuesday for this one. I got canvas tote bags with the sun and moon on them and filled with themed snacks for our group of 6. Sunny d, capri sun, starbursts, eclipse gum, sun chips, star crunch, cosmic brownies, peanut butter suns, black and white cookies, sunmaid raisins and moon pies. I also found moon stress balls.
Playlist is ready to go and we even got eclipse t shirts. My BIL and his dad got amazing pics in 2017 so I will let them handle the photography although they will be in Ohio so I hope it’s clear for them.
We are at 96%. DD is a huge science nerd and loves all things space. She’s been looking forward to this for awhile! Unfortunately the weather could not be worse and I don’t think we will see much of anything.

My husband is driving to Indy, too. Apparently, Butler University has a planetarium and is planning some stuff.

We're in the ~93% range in MA so we'll just watch from home/school! We're expecting good weather. Two friends just canceled trips where the weather was looking more iffy.
