Thanks for all of the math sympathy! I'm going to just keep encouraging him to do his best. I think he's OK. Though, now that I think about it, he has brought home a few tests with scores that were not great, so I don't know if that is indicative of a larger problem. His teacher hasn't approached us with any concerns though.
We have been practicing the spring math 2 minutes a night at home too after we do our nightly reading, using sheets the teacher has sent home, but by the time he has school, aftercare, baseball, dinner, he is really not focused at homework time and I get it. I don't want to make him hate the subject.
Maybe there's a fun app I can get or something that he would like on the iPad to make practicing a little more tolerable.
macmars45, this graph H showed me shows that their target is 35 in 2 minutes. That seems like a damn lot to me. But he's gotten 33 at home before. I think some of the issue is that Spring math is at the end of the day and he is not as focused by then.

Congratulations emilyinchile, and Mr. in Chile. Absolutely stunning and fairy tail!
((( beerlover,))) my non-parent, non-teacher spidey senses are wondering about accomodations for timed testing that young and if they're even possible. Have we ::waives hand:: as a society realized a lot of folks at any age don't do well on timed, standardized tests, or is that just me?
lavenderblue I love BBT. It's my go-to show when I need a brain break, and somewhat of a comfort show. My poor husband is so sick of it, lol.
emilyinchile, you are such a gorgeous family! Congratulations. Your dress is everything!
I have to brag on myself and my dog for a minute. We rescued him 5.5 years ago. The rescue said he was abused by his male owner and had serious trust issues around men. Never aggressive, just legit terrified, which led to him turning on a mean bark when he felt threatened (again, mostly around men, especially if they have facial hair and are tall). He's a doberman/pitt mix, so pretty large and definitely with a scary bark. We have worked with him for so long to trust men again and he does a great job about 95% of the time. He still gets very nervous around a man he doesn't know, and even more so if I'm with him (I'm his person, and he will definitely protect me). I take him on the majority of his walks, both as a way to train him and as a way for me to get exercise. We work on him making eye contact with me and me talking to him in a soothing voice when someone approaches us (whether it's man/woman/child). Today on our walk, a tall man with facial hair and a hoodie pulled up over his head was walking opposite us on the sidewalk and for the first time ever, he didn't react at all. Usually this man would have gotten the tail straight up, ears perked up, low growl until we passed, but today, all the man got was one tiny tail wag and a watchful eye. Doggo got all the pets and treats when we got home!

I'm staying at my brother's for one more night/day before his friend comes to take over the next leg of help. My brother still has a long way to go, but he's hopeful he might be ok on his own very soon. Hoping friends can come by during the day to help with bigger tasks/meal train, but I'm trying to give him some space to figure that out.
Oh and to follow up on my gift post I ended up buying a gift card to a coffee place the family likes to walk too, Target gift card, Magic the Gathering cards and a new cat bed because my brother's cat took over one of the other families. I'm not familiar with Magic cards so I hope they're the right "kind", and they're not too adult for the kids. All I keep picturing is some 4 boobed character and the parents like "thanks, but no thanks", lol.
My brother has HBO Max so I'm trying to get the most out of it because we don't have it at home. On one hand I've watched so many (dark) documentaries/shows (Mother God, Bama Rush, half of the Staircase reenactment show) I'm sick of them for now, but also FOMO am I missing anything I'll want to watch later?

Oh one more semi true random. Can someone explain to the FAFSA issue to me like I'm 5? I'm far enough out of HE (thank goodness) that I only follow complaint posts, but don't understand what's causing all of the horrible issues.

A new fafsa was introduced this year and has been completely full of major technical issues. The rollout was delayed months, and people are just now getting their SAI s (what used to be called EFC) but there are issues with being able to sign, people signing and it saying it hasn’t been signed. It was supposed to be simplified, but things like family size that were supposed to be drawn directly from tax returns are coming back off (often saying family of 2 when there are 4-5). And some schools are allowing students to delay accepting past May 1 because they haven’t released aid awards due to the delay while others aren’t, so it’s a huge mess.

I told my kids’ various elementary teachers to knock it off with the timed math drills. They didn’t really care at all and just stopped timing my daughter or figured out a different way to do it where she was unaware of the timing being done. It freaked her out and I was tired of tears over math. I didn’t want yet another, “Hehe, math is hard!” girl minted due to her perfectionism taking over and telling her to give up rather than fail.
I am *all for* drilling the hell out of math - it is so important and the basis for success as concepts get harder.
But speed as a success indicator is wild to me in the era of addressing mental health and wellness as a component in schools. I’m a slow reader and take my time with math to be successful. I love math and am a great student who easily demonstrates what I’ve learned. I never once completed a timed math drill in school and it knocked my confidence down astoundingly. It was only when I got my master’s that I realized - holy shit, I’m good at math and enjoy doing it.

DS hated math minute, especially before he was on ADHD meds because he would get so overwhelmed. I never really understood the thought process behind it.
We have a party to go to soon and even though it's casual I want to look nice so I just ordered a pair of linen cotton blend joggers. I am hoping they fit. I figure I will pair them with a white tank and jean jacket I have.
I still haven't gotten the Prom ticket situation resolved but I am currently laying it on thick with the Superintendent. Everything that I've said is true though so I'm hoping that she can do something.
My neighbor is having a huge tree cut down. Because of how the lots are, they couldn't fell the tree, so are having to cut off the large branches one by one and left them out and over the house with a crane that must be 100ft tall. It's kind of fun to watch actually so I called 16 y/o DS out to watch with me because he use to love that kind of stuff when he was little, and apparently he still does because we had a great time watching it together.
Patsy Baloney, yeah, I want to be careful about mental health here with this, too. DS literally said "that's why I hate myself" re: not being fast at Spring Math so I am keeping a close eye on that. H and I talked to him about the comment and I do think he is OK and was just frustrated and tired last night. :/
It’s really good! I don’t do sci fi either but a trusted friend recommended it. Apparently it wasn’t originally intended to be so funny but the lead actor was so naturally funny that the writers and director switched it up.
Queen Dick, Hibernating Bear and@rosiebear, I won’t spoil anything but there’s a scene with the mayor and his wife where Dr. Hook “Sharing the Night Together” is playing that is comedic genius.

I have flash cards and I use them as a war-style card game with my kids. They have gotten a lot faster at spitting out their multiplication facts doing it and it’s more fun than worksheets.

I full on choked on my drink during the scene with the octopus. I won't say more but omg 😂
I'm currently rewatching Sons of Anarchy. I like to rewatch old stuff I've already seen before on my tablet while I'm cooking or working from home so if I'm focused and I miss something it's fine.
I remembered loving this show. I'm only a few eps in and I might quit it. It's grossing me out, it didnt age well (at least the early first seasons). These guys definitely read as trump supporters so maybe that's what's grossing me out.

Congrats emilyinchile! You all looked lovely, and I especially love your flowers!
So we have a duck that has built a nest under one of our bushes and laid at least 1 confirmed egg. The first day we saw it, my dogs were going crazy barking at it, and I was not happy about this and was googling to see if I could have some sort of wildlife refuge remove it. Once it had laid at least one egg though, that was not possible (it's illegal to move). My dogs have since calmed down about it luckily (the nest is outside of the area where my dogs can access it, but they can see it), but I still worry a bit about what will happen when the eggs hatch, like will they wander into my dogs' area and get massacred??? We've also since done more than a cursory bit of research on ducks, their laying habits, how long it will take for the eggs to hatch, what they will do after they hatch, etc., and shown all the kids in the neighborhood. The nest is very visible, but under a bush that is right at the corner of the steps that go up to our back yard that my kids go up and down each day when they go to the bus, and the duck doesn't even flinch when they walk by it or stand to look at it.
Our landscapers were here today, and they were going around edging, so I had to go out and point out the duck and nest to make sure they didn't disturb it. I felt a little crazy doing so, but I also would have been devastated if they like blew grass cuttings at it.

Patsy Baloney, 1000% for the mental health thing. I've been reading a lot about ADHD and while I'm untested, undiagnosed, I resonate with getting overwhelmed with timing or too many things at once. Plus I've had managers say "did you do that too fast?" when a mistake came up and it wasn't *that* time sensitive. Yeah all around it's just going to teach kids really bad time management and create more MH issues.
lavenderblue, I saw your post about the prom tickets and I will burn it down with you. *Back in my day* kids who were in district but attended in an alternate setting (homeschool) absolutely were allowed and encouraged to participate in sports and activities. This should be the same for your child, and allow them a time to log out of their studies and log in to a system to purchase a ticket. What even happens to kids who were out sick that day?
Thank you penguingrrl,, that sounds like a nightmare. We had enough issues with our FA office being a revolving door and not releasing packages until March or April pre-the new FAFSA, so I'm so glad I'm not there now. HE folks used to a May 1 deposit deadline are going to have a terrible summer too. Rolling admission schools have to hustle in the summer to pick up the folks who missed May 1, so now that just goes even longer
@leehamrythmes I think I spelled that wrong, been thinking of you. I hope your new transition is going well.

You’re welcome. From what I understand nightmare doesn’t even begin to describe it. I currently have a junior so am prepping to start the process with them and nervous.
They also no longer factor having multiple kids in college into SAI, so if you get one SAI for one kid, the second doubles the amount you “can afford” so a lot of families won’t be able to afford what they get (CSS schools will be alright because most are sharing that they’re factoring that in even though FAFSA isn’t). It makes no sense because they already bleed you dry on calculating affordability, who can afford that number times multiple kids at once?
I've been low key job hunting since January. I was applying for a ton at first, then took a break, and as of a month ago when I re-started, there just doesn't seem to be many/any positions worth applying to.
So today, I come across a new job posting, in an industry I'd like to transition into, in a hybrid role 15 minutes from my house, with a pay scale that is beyond what I was hoping for. The description is basically custom-written for my experience. I got so excited. Then the last line is "There is a preferred candidate, but other applications will be considered."
So annoying. I'm going to apply anyway, since I have my resume and a baseline cover letter ready to go. But I guess I won't hold my breath on that one.

We had to remove a gigantic tree in our yard a few years ago. Lucy and her friend sat on her bed watching through the window like it was the worlds greatest tv show

My kid abandoned me 2 books into the Heroes of Olympus series (the 5 books after Percy Jackson’s series). I kept reading on my own, because I was genuinely curious how it was going to be resolved.
I finished that set of 5, only to find out there were 5 more (Trials of Apollo).
I finished the last Apollo book on my lunch break only to find out there’s another book stemming from that series (The Sun and the Star). And there is another Percy Jackson book out and another one coming in September.
And I won’t lie, I’ve had the Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase in my cart for a long time now.
IMAGINE IF I HAD JUST STOPPED WHEN MY KID DID? The peace I would have. Rick Riordan, I’m going to have to ask you to stop writing. Please. For me.

So did you like his books or not? I've seen people say the Percy Jackson books are better than Harry Potter. I'm a huge Potter fan and just finished reading the series through twice with DD1. I'm debating starting PJ but I picked up the first book and it's written first person, which I kind of hate. I put it back down... but I keep wondering if it is worth trying it anyway.
I recently got The Cursed Child from the used bookstore and I was also turned off by it being written in play format. I'm about halfway through it and debating whether to finish or not. It is ok and I'm curious to see where it goes, but I really dislike the format.

noodleoo I love them. They are so fun to read and read aloud. I think PJ and his crew are amazing and the diversity in the different series is so great. The stories are fun and I enjoy the modern spin on mythology. They can be devastating and deeply emotional. They are also written in such a way that I wonder how they interlock so well. Like, is there a gigantic story map in Rick Riordan’s basement that he’s referencing? They’re wonderfully creative and I find myself flipping back to re-live particular moments. There’s a certain “cool” to a lot of characters and I love it when they start in with the heroics.
To give you an idea about my likes - I read HP as it came out when I was a kid. Last book came out when I was in college. I enjoyed it. Prisoner of Azkaban is the best of the 7 by far for me. The fandom is a bit much for me and I’ve never re-read them. The long-lasting devotion people have to the series is a bit perplexing to me, but a lot of that world didn’t zing me. And, as it must always be said, fuck JK Rowling.

I *loved* the HP books when I first read them too but didn't reread until I started with DD1 a few years ago. While I still enjoyed them, a lot struck me on the reread as not being as good as I remembered. Also, agree with the fuck JK Rowling. I've made a point of not buying any of the books for DD1 new, only used or on Buy Nothing so nothing goes back to her. DD1 and all her friends are so into it though! She's almost 9, do you think PJ is age appropriate for her? We've been reading HP together but I knew where to warn her about deaths/scary parts whereas I haven't read PJ yet.

Rocket math, fast math, timed math, it's all for the purpose of math fluency, but unfortunately, not everybody kicks up those skills at the same rate, so it spectacularly backfires. A LOT. When I was in school, it was timed multiplication tests on worksheets. 3 minutes to do 50 problems. SO many problems. Now it's the same kind of stuff on computer programs. Still the WORST.
I agree with ALL the posters that said, "Want to make a kid hate math even more in the formative years? Have them do Fast Math." It sucks.

Yes, start with The Lightning Thief! PJ is kind of a dicky-middle-schooler who always has a quip. Once you settle in, I’m confident you’ll start to like the first person. It works to hear his thoughts about himself and others as he navigates this weird world he’s thrust into.
I’m trying to remember when I started reading them with my DD. We saw the musical the summer between her 3rd and 4th grade year and started reading them immediately after because we LOVED them. I’d go for it.
There are battles, deaths, romantic relationships/crushes, but I don’t feel like anything is disturbing or graphic. As the series go on (PJ, Olympus, Apollo) they get more mature, but never too much for the pre-tween/tween group. Apollo is heavier (I cried a lot) because it’s kind of a study on emotional healing from trauma, grief, etc., but it’s all very funny and balanced.
Queen Dick, Hibernating Bear and@rosiebear, I won’t spoil anything but there’s a scene with the mayor and his wife where Dr. Hook “Sharing the Night Together” is playing that is comedic genius.

My sister found it on some kind of site and she went to see it with me. We let the realtor know I'm very interested and it would be a cash offer, but we asked to see the HOA bylaws first because she didn't seem to know what the condo fee covered and she verbally said that there's no restrictions on pets but we want to see it in writing. When I sold my condo we didn’t request docs until we went under contract because they were only valid for a limited time and we had to pay a rather large fee each time we asked for them. So, my guess is she didn’t have them on hand and is now at the whim of the condo board/HOA/management company.

I was able to find the originals on the registry of deeds, but they're from 1986. There was one amendment to them filed in 2016, so hopefully they are still otherwise as originally written. When we sold our townhouse last year the realtor had to have a copy of them before we listed the house so she could answer any questions people had about that. This is just a 12 unit building so it's not a huge HOA situation. The originals do state that there's no limits on pets as long as they aren't disturbing anyone.
