Dh needs a new suit. We're attending two black tie optional weddings this summer and another this fall; the timing is right. He doesn't wear a suit for work and really doesn't wear one often; just a couple times a year. He hasn't gained or lost a pound in probably a decade and has a nice physique. He wears a suit well.
Where should we/he shop? What's the current style? I feel like pants are slightly more fitted than they used to be? Still flat front? Anything else?

My DH had 2 custom suits made at Jos A Bank a couple of years ago. They are really nice and he gets complimented every time he wears them. You get to pick everything (lining, button type, lapels, etc.). It was a great experience, and not as expensive as you might think.

I think my H would love this. Can you give me a price range? Like under $1K ?
(I'd love to be around $500... do we need to spend much more? I honestly have no clue)
DH has several and a whole bunch more suit coats from Jos A Bank. He got measured there and found out the size/style that worked for him and I've bought the majority of them on super sale on their website. He's very happy with them

I think it was around $1200 for 2 suits. We didn’t buy the absolute top of the line, but not the bottom either. They may have been on a deal at the time, but I don’t remember for sure. It’s worth a look! My DH has a body that doesn’t fit an off the rack suit at all. Huge upper body/shoulders and a tiny waist. He’s basically an upside down triangle, ha. Anyway, the custom suit fits impeccably.
Wherever he goes, make sure he gets alterations done. Off the rack is generally not ideal for looking well put together and since these are more formal events, he will be more comfortable if its's well fitting.
Generally, I recommend a classic look with higher waist pants and a longer classic length jacket. You want the top button closure to create a nice V and should hit about halfway between their collar bone and the floor when wearing shoes. A well tailored arm pit will keep the suit jacket from lifting at the shoulders with arm movement. The current trend of short jacket and super tight arms and legs are not flattering imo and usually make the suit look cheap and ill fitting. It will also not age well, and since he is a stable size you will get the most bang for your buck by choosing a classic look and better fabric.
MH typically goes to Men's Warehouse because he gets a discount there through his work. He's had one black suit for almost 20 years that still looks current. He just had to get some larger pants last year, but since it was a classic fabric in black, he was able to match them with current offerings easily. Apparently, I have lots of thoughts on men's suits, lol.

Alton Lane is a high-end suit place near me, but they also have a line they do for Nordstrom and you can find it at Nordstrom Rack. We got one from there and took it to a good tailor.
The last suit we bought H was from Nordstrom. That was back in 2012 or maybe 2014. So it's been a minute. I know nothing. We went to Nordstrom because the staff are knowledgeable and they tailor it for no extra charge.
Brooks Brothers/Brooks Brothers outlet? I find the Nordstroms staff around here only help the regulars, so its not somewhere I'd look for a suit if you aren't in that department regularly.
