Here I am in a normal pair of my low rise jeans from AE. Do these look bad? I sadly don't have an ass shot.
those are really bad.
you need something slimmer in the knees and fitted (fitted is different than tight), much darker wash, no trendy weird pockets with big flaps, no weird faded areas, and nothing that bunches at the bottom.
and really, only thin/very toned people look good in low rise jeans. anything that cuts right below a bulge (or softer spot that might bulge if you move weird) is no beuno. even when I was a size 2-4, low rise jeans were not my friend.

So what type of rise do you wear? I really don't feel like I should be wearing jeans that are belly button height at my age. No matter what rise or size I wear I will probably have a bulge if I move weird. Maybe I'm blind, but I can't tell what type of rise someone is wearing if their shirt is loosely covering their pants.
OP I agree that jeans shouldn't give you a muffin top, so I'm glad you are returning them. Especially at that price! That's so expensive for Maurices! I haven't shopped there much since HS but I don't remember them being anywhere near that price back then!
The other jeans you posted look find though I agree you can't tell a whole lot from that picture.
The 2 pairs of jeans I'm currently rotating are from Loft and J Crew. I've had good luck at Gap, Banana Republic, sometimes Express. I'm your size or a little larger (I guess I'm a 14 most places now, still a 12 at Loft lol). I also don't find that heavy stitching or patterns on the pockets do much for me and my big ass, but that could just be me.
They were Silvers. Maybe I will expand my stores I go to for jeans. I honestly didn't think J Crew sold anything big enough for me! Maybe I can get the famous No 2 pencil skirts and just wear those instead of jeans! LOL!

Finding the correct fit has nothing to do with age.

we are the same age, and my jeans come pretty close to my belly button. I don't understand why that's an issue? if they're fitted and your shirt is the proper length, no one sees the top of your jeans. they do see a nice smooth line though (and no muffin top).
ah, I found a faceless photo which is better. my jeans come up to about where my middle finger here. midrise jeans don't all look like mom jeans. they can be your friend and suck everything in, lol.
I'm with tacom. Particularly because nowadays longer shirts are in style so people won't see how high up your jeans go, mid-rise is fine. And hides a lot of sins.
I like Gap Always Skinny which are midrise without being mom jeans.
My best jeans hit just below my belly button. They keep everything smooth, there's no squeezing where my waist starts to widen out. I like pants that hit closer to my natural waist. I'm not a soccer mom, and I'm not (that) old. I feel like low rise is not really on trend anymore, anyway. It's not like anyone can tell where it hits unless you're regularly wearing crop tops or something.
