My hair is about 4 inches below my shoulders and I'm having trouble with all my recent cuts. I have a lot of hair, but its all very thin if that makes any sense. I have been having difficulty finding a good hair stylist and finally thought I got one, but I'm still having the same issue since I moved away from my fav stylist. My hair looks and feels very stringy and piecey at the bottom. It will look ok if I constantly brush it, but that's not realistic. My current hair dresser said it because of bad cuts and poor layers, but she has been cutting my hair for the last 9 months and I notice no change. Anyone have this issue?

I have the same type of hair. It's fine, but I have a lot of it that also goes a few inches past my shoulders. Mine is also heavily color treated. I'm very picky about stylists, salons, and products. My stylist is young, but she is constantly doing continuing ed. Everyone in my salon is required to do 3 hours of it after a 6 month apprenticeship where they can't touch clients. They are also required to travel for workshops once a season. No one that works there complains about these requirements and the owners heavily enforce this. They also do a lot of celebrities, high profile events, and fashion shows. I'm not in a metropolitan area either. I skip salons that rent booths or have people standing around. Stylists don't get better at cutting by not doing it. The place I go to offers sampling and gives free cuts away if there is openings that day. They post them on FB and the stylists get huge tips from sampling. They also encourage regular clients to sample to get a back up stylist. They'd rather keep the clients than lose them if they can't get in right away. Look for places that encourage learning, avoid booth rentals, and are sulfate free.
I stick to salon products. I use sulfate and paraben free shampoo and conditioner, stay away from flat irons as much as possible, and always use heat protectant and sun protectant. For fly aways and to keep my ends nice, I use Bumble & Bumble Brillantine or Moroccan Oil. I also only wash 2-3 times a week and use dry shampoo. I also avoid salons that use sulfate free products. I also use the ribbon hair ties that Sephora and Anthro carry since they don't rip my hair. Avoid anything that can damage your hair.

I'm in the Midwest. I can pm you the name if you'd like. My stylist got to hang out with Slash last week when he came in and signed their wall. One of the owners has been learning for 20 years under Sam Brocato and another manages Sublime and ironically Dirty Heads. Their color line and work is crazy good. I wish I could ship these people off to people who need great cuts.
Look for places that are heavy on continuing ed and very interactive with clients. Also, look for places that emphasize precision cutting. Don't always judge younger stylists in good places by their hair. Mine shaves her head almost weekly, but has an insane wig collection that she cuts and styles constantly. She worked last Halloween in a 3 foot tall Marge Simpson wig that she did all the work on.
