I am staying with in-laws this weekend and am curious about ideas for a hostess gift. Was thinking of stopping at a store on the way and picking up wine and flowers, but was curious if you had any other ideas?
We are flying in, so need to pick something up along the way...wine and flowers just seem so boring! But I know I always appreciate whatever people bring us, if they even remember...

Wine is always good. If you wanted to you could do a quick stop by a grocery store and do a meal in a basket thing. Ex. Bottle of wine, pasta, sauce, parmesan, fresh bread, garlic, sack salad, and gelatto. It doesn't have to be super expensive, but its still cute.
I'm bringing wine and a scarf for a dinner party tonight. The hostess is making a Thai dish, and it's a silk scarf I bought in Thailand. Seemed appropriate, somehow...

That is a really cute idea.
Love the idea of getting a little more (nuts, some cheese, etc, and picking up a basket if possible).
I always try to take something local as a hostess gift if I can. I just pack it in my bag. I take things like Sand Hill Plum jelly, a wheat mix that is made a few miles from us, a wheat weaving (this one depends on the person!), etc.
I like ruralrabbit's idea of nice local jam. A pound of coffee is good too. You could do a little breakfast bag with jam, coffee and/or tea, and some good quality granola or something.

I agree. Especially if the hosts have ever lived in your area, there may be some local packaged food that you take for granted that they always wish they could have.
