I have one pair of bootcut, I think they're more flattering than flares, but that's my opinion. I have seen people who still wear flares and I don't think it's a big "don't" or anything. I say wear what you feel comfortable in.

I don't think they're "out." I say if you like them, wear them. As an aside, coming from a fellow pear, I usually find bootcut to be more flattering than flares
I don't think they're "out" but I also don't think they're "in" and it gives me the sads. I've always preferred flared jeans and it's hard to find them right now. If a store has them, there is usually only one "style" of them and then 10 different styles of skinny jeans. I like bootcut too, but only when the bootcut is still slightly flared. I've worn some "bootcut" jeans that were a bit skinnier than I would like and I still felt like I had peg leg.

Yeah, last Fall I feel like every store kept pushing that flares were back and skinnies would be out.
I think honestly both are "in". It's all about styling the flares though, especially since I don't think you want to get a "teenage fit" that may look sloppy. As someone else mentioned, I think darker washes are usually more flattering.
Have you considered boot cut? I feel like those usually look the best on everyone.
