Let's say my 401k balance is $100k and my value change for the year is a $10k increase. But it says my rate of return is -9%. Both assune YTD. How does that work? A few months back I reallocated some money bc my company had some new funds to invest in, and I wanted to diversify a little more. Does that affect it? I don't understand how I made money but have a negative rate of return....
When you say you reallocated, did you sell out of current positions in order to allocate money to new funds? If so, then yes that can account for your loss. You might have sold the old funds at a loss.
thanks everyone. The stmt that had the loss was my last quarterly stmt (just realized), but this morning it says rate of return as of today is 12%. I def think when I re did my contribution allocation, there was some type of glitch in the calculation formula. (May have sold some at a loss at the time, though I don't think so) Whew! 12% makes much more sense...
