Some hamsters are evil. You will have to clean its cage. Wood chips will get everywhere. It will most likely bite the kid and escape to burrow under your couch, never to be seen again. The kid will get attached and it will die 3 years later.
I love hamsters though. Far superior to guinea pigs.
Also there's a high probability it will have babies. Ours showed up pregnant from the pet store. And another time we thought we had 2 girls. But we didn't. And they ate the babies.

We had a fluffy grey hamster in the 2 year old room I used to work in. She was so cute and snuggly. She would start clapping like a seal whenever we came in for the morning to get picked up. We fed her fruity pebbles and fruits and veggies and if you gave her a cheeto she started running laps around the cage like a dog with a GIANT orange bone and oh. whoops.
It chewed out of its metal cage (which hamsters aren't supposed to like metal), got into the back of the dryer and fried itself buy chewing on the heating element.
my dad found him. He couldn't figure out why his clothes weren't drying
I love hamsters so much. I would have one if I wasn't convinced my cats would eat it.
I used to have hamsters in college. One of them died of cancer. She had a lump on her chest/breast, and the vet (my then BF's sister) removed it through surgery, but within a couple of weeks, she was covered in bumps. I cried so much when we put her down.
The other one lived really old, and was put down once she was starting to fall over her side randomly. They were seriously the most affectuous little things ever.
My only fear is that toddlers and hamsters don't go well together.

We just got a hamster today. DS named him Bob. He's burrowed sleeping now. I will have to post a picture later. He's cute and I had them as a kid. We also had 4 dogs but one died of old age about a year ago and another dug out of the back yard about 6 months ago and we never found him. Soooo adding a hamster to our current 2 dog situation was no big deal.
My brother had a rat when we were little and she was awesome. We have always been the crazy animal people. Dd has been trying to talk my mom into a pet llama for 5 years since they have acreage.
