I just remembered this conversation from last night...
Mom is telling me how my paternal grandmother is showing signs of dementia, and that it runs in the family. I didn't know this - I was only 8 or 9 when my great grandfather passed away, and just remember him as old.
She then refers to the fact that he was probably crazy because of the surgery he had in his 40's. (I'm thinking - plate in his head, brain surgery, etc.)... and I asked what surgery?
THEN she tells me - my great grandmother had to have a hysterectomy and was convinced he wouldn't want her anymore (not even going to bark up that tree), so she made him have his testicles removed so he wouldn't have an affair!!!! So that poor man lived the majority of his life (he died in his late 90's) without testicles...he must've loved her a whole hell of a lot.
I'm just in disbelief....it makes me think of her differently, now, for some reason.
And this may be bad, but my first thought was well, the guy at the funeral home must have gotten quite a shock when he was embalmed....
Apparently my Dad told her at some point in their marriage (he was my Dad's grandfather). She couldn't believe I didn't know because it's common knowledge in the family.
And stingshark - I know, right? I mean, this was back in the 1940's or 1950's (can't remember exactly how old he would be now, and too lazy to do the math) but still!
