Fashion question. Belt over a coat

They always do this on makeover shows or in magazines. An outdoor coat and then a belt worn over it. A belt that does not belong so no belt loops on the coat.

Heres my question. How do you a) wear the coat open if you get warm/go inside? And b) what do you do with the belt when you arrive at your destination?

It is pretty rare that you will spend an entire day outdoors when you would wear a stylish coat. (you could be outdoors all day at a sporting event, hiking)

I was driving yesterday and all these random thoughts came in my head. I guess I have post overload today. It has been rainy and gloomy all morning.
The belt over coat thing has bugged me for awhile.

I have not really seen what you are describing, but I guess anywhere you go that allows you to hang your coat you can also hang the belt on the same hanger, or coil it up and put it in the coat pocket.
