There are also other things you can do. You still have some time to decide. Aren't you interested in public health? H has a few residency friends who are EIS fellows at the CDC. www.cdc.gov/eis/index.html
Yes I have looked into that program So they are in residency doing it? I always wondered about that because it says you have to have a license to practice in your specialty so I didn't know if that meant you had to be finished with residency already.
They did internal medicine residencies. One is headed to Argentina this week because there is a pertussis outbreak there.
Right now, DD sleeps from about 7:30pm to 7am, so it's hard for me to imagine having much time with her if I were working 70 hours/week. But if some of those hours were when she was sleeping, it would be an easier pill to swallow.
And, especially if it's not a long-term thing (your hours will ultimately get better, right?) I'd be inclined to go with the job I love.
Also, not all kids sleep 12 hours a night. DD sleeps 9PM-6 AM. I get plenty of time with her. I would never see your kid, as I get home at 7:30 and leave for work at 8.
I'm going to admit *I* probably would not want to have a kid working 70 hours a week. I biotch about my 50-60 hours now. BUT I also don't love what I do (as evidenced by how often I am on GBCN).
BUT if I LOVED what I did, I think I'd suck up the 70 hour weeks for a few years.
I feel the same. I would quit altogether before I would work 70 hours a week at my current job. But I don't LOVE it. Who knows what sacrifices I might be willing to make if I did?
Also, if it is really just 4 years of residency and a couple years after that would involve really bad hours, I would be inclined to do it. I really believe that it is easier to work long hours when your kids are babies. The older my kids get, the more I feel like I need to be around and available. While working 70 hours a week forever is more than I would probably be willing to do even for a job I loved, I think I would be willing to do it for a few years, especially if it meant a job I loved with more reasonable hours down the line.

OP, is the long hours job OBGYN? In my admittedly limited experience, I don't think the hours typically get a whole lot better unless you drop the OB part altogether.

Yup. My kids sleep from about 9:30 to 6:30. I drop them off at school at 9:30 and pick them up at 5:30, so we have about 7 hours together a day. I feel like it is plenty of time. And chances are that if you don't sleep much, your kids won't sleep a lot either. No one in my family needs much sleep, and my kids have definitely followed this pattern.
