We are in the middle of a move. Our house sold as of Friday, we aren't taking possession of our new house for another month. We moved 90% of our stuff into a storage unit but had movers come for the 9 large things. They moved it into their storage unit and then will deliver it to our new house.
They show up at 8.15 and are done right before 10.15. It was literally 9 items and first they had to go around and inspect them and make notes of any scratches/ marks. they had to take apart the bed, wrap a few items in shrink wrap etc. When they left they could not provide me with an end time because they still had to take it to their storage unit and unload. Unit is at most, with traffic 45 minutes away. I got a bill today for an additional 3 hours plus one hour travel time so that is not part of the addtional 3 hours.
This is a very highly rated moving company that several of my friends have used but I am really questioning how in the world it took a little less then 2 hours to do all the prep AND the moving into the truck but then took another 3 hours to unload it from the truck into their unit??
Yes I would for sure. If they got stuck in traffic that'd be one thing but it wouldn't take that long to put an entire apartment into storage. Are you paying by the hour of service per person and had two guys maybe? Like it took a half hour on that side so with two guys that would be five hours?
I would question this, but not sure how far this will get you. Hindsight and all that, any time we have done something like what you described (3 or 4 times) one of us has gone to storage unit with them. THat way, there are no questions.
ok, thanks. I am going to call them. I wasn't sure if there was something I wasn't thinking about or if I was being nitpicky.
It was 2 guys at an hourly rate. they estimated it would take 4 hours, but even the main guy when they got there said, oh that's all? this won't take long and I heard him on the phone with their office saying they would be done in 2 hours (which clearly they were from my house) and he made a comment when I was signing the slip about putting the end time and anything I paid over (I had to pay for the 4 hour estimate) would be put to the month's storage bill.

You could call them but it's likely that they bill by a set rate based on the truck size you rent (i.e. how much stuff you have). They couldn't have booked anyone else during that time frame just because your job happened to wrap up quickly, so it's understandable why they run billing how they do.

but it isn't how they do it. At least that's not how they told me. they asked me for an exact list of what they were taking (since it was literally only 9 things) and then they bill on the time it takes. They estimated it would take 4 hours, they told me specifically when they estimate that if it's high or low the final bill gets adjusted- they only bill for how long it takes- and this was the experience of several of my friends- they estimated one at 8 hours and it only took 6 so she was refunded the difference- I just feel like I am getting taken advantage of since we weren't there for the exact end time
I would question it and fight the additional charge. But moving companies are notorious for being sketchy, so I would be prepared for battle...
yeah and that's another reason I am not sure I want to even bother calling. I don't know if it's worth the battle for $100ish. when really I can't prove it didn't take them that long. I think I am going to call and just question it at least and see what they have to say
Yes, I would call for sure. Even if you have to pay for the whole four hours, which it doesn't sound like should have based on how they operate, it sounds like you were billed for 6. So yeah, that's BS. There's no way it took them 3 hours to move 9 things off a truck.
