So apparently today is Boss' Day. Those that work in our department started up a collection for a gift and are taking our boss out for lunch. My suck-up co-worker gave our boss an individual gift.
I didn't know this was a big thing. I didn't give in for the gift. Sorry, boss makes way more than I do and she took away my work at home day when she found out SHE messed up and wasn't authorized to allow it to start with. Why should I be buying her gifts?
I'm really, really against Boss's Day and I'm glad my office doesn't celebrate it. I hate the idea that I "owe" my boss something beyond showing up and doing my job.
I just baked some cookies. I genuinely like my boss and he does a lot for me. He didn't know there was such a thing as boss day but he liked the cookies. And then I didn't feel like an ass when other managers were talking about what their employees did for them...
I am so annoyed by this. For the first time in 6 years, one of my coworkers decided we need to celebrate, so we will be taking my boss out for lunch tomorrow (she wasn't available today). I wouldn't mind if it was anyone else, but my boss is an idiot.

We did a breakfast for all the bosses today and gave a gift to the big boss. I'll be honest... I don't really get the idea of giving him a gift (it was cash), I mean, we're giving him a give BECAUSE he's the boss and therefore makes more than us. It's a weird concept to me.
Hell no. You know how the VP of my department shows his appreciation for us? He says, maybe once or twice a year, "Let's all meet at <crappy chain restaurant> after work on <whatever day>, the first round is on me." So if I want to take him up on his *cough* generous hospitality, I have to extend my workday even further without getting paid for it to spend time with people I don't particularly like and pay for my own dinner so he can buy me a $3 drink.
My staff used to do something, but nothing this year. I liked getting a card and when they brong me fruit. So really I would have been psyched if they put a card and a nice orange on my desk, but oh well.
My boss is in another state. I was so busy I didn't even send her an email. I may write a nice note and drop it in the mail. She's really been supportive lately, so I owe her that any way.
My boss has just me and 1 other person on our team. We each chipped in and I think we got a Barnes and Noble gift card (my coworker picked it up). I don't really mind since my boss is pretty pleasant to work for and he works very hard and deserves recognition. I find it a little odd that the recognition should come from subordinates - I think there should be a day where bosses celebrate the people working for them, too. But I'll go along with it since I like my boss.
I wasn't that excited that my coworker suggested doing $25 each (that's what she's done in past years, I'm new on the team) because that's more than I spend on most birthday/Christmas gifts for friends and less close family. But no biggie I guess.
I want to know when there is a day to celebrate people in my position....
Um yeah... whose stupid fucking idea was this? Boss's day my ass.
I'll celebrate boss's day just as soon as we have "People in the middle day" so we can celebrate the people who are actually doing work around my office.
There are 10 people on my team. One is the boss. One is the admin. Why exactly would I celebrate either of them while the other 8 of us are shit on?
I don't have a problem with the boss giving the admin something on admin's day - he's the one who monopolizes her time anyway. But I'm also a fan of the phrase "you don't gift up" and I find it very odd that anyone would expect me to buy a gift or meal for someone who makes probably 3-4x what I make, especially when he knows what I make.

Usually my assistant will make a point about doing something even though I have told her that she doesn't need to. So far nothing has happened, so maybe she listened to me ;-)
I am with those who think this whole " boss day" concept is bullshit. I can kind of understand a card, if you jave am awesome manager, but no way would I spend more than $5, or buy lunch or get a gift.
We each had to give 20 effing dollars for one boss. Plus, come holiday season, we need to probably chip in another $35-$40 to buy gifts for the two bosses. I am sure we are probably the only office in the world that does something this crazy. Ugh. And soon, I will be paying to come to work due to daycare costs for two kids.
