I’ve wondered all along how TLC went about finding 5 Amish/Mennonite to cast in this show. It’s not like they could show up in their community and be like “Yo! Who wants to leave and become English??” The scenes where they’re filming at the homes had me all sorts of confused too – I know Amish don’t allow themselves to be knowingly photographed or filmed – but Abe’s mom and family let the camera onto their property and into their homes.
Want to know the scoop I read about or should I leave that a surprise?
It's fake fake fake!! I mean, Sabrina (right name?) got her make over and is all "I'll just put these earrings in"....I've yet to meet any Amish with pierced ears. And how did the trampy one figure out how to walk in heels soooo easily??

Well...apparently my work blocks the site, but just Google "starcasm breaking amish"
If your work blocks the site too, here's the lowdown:
1) Abe and Rebecca have been a couple since 2010 2) Rebecca was married in early 2010 (I think) and her divorce was filed July 2012 (2 months after Breaking Amish started filming) 3) Sabrina was married in 2009 to a non-Amish man 4) Jeremiah left the Amish community several years ago, long enough to marry an English woman, have 3 kids and get divorced. He also has around 17 police reports on him, most of which were for DV.
Oh!! And there's rumors that Abe and Rebecca had a baby girl in 2011, but that story seems kind of sketchy to me.
There's a photo of Rebecca with her real teeth on that site too.

Oh and the tattoo Jeremiah has? His biological brother who he met in 2004 (or maybe it was 2007???) said he had the tattoo then.....
I'm bummed the show is SO fake. I mean, I get that some things needed to be exaggerated, but to have the cast this far removed from the community just takes away from it.
I may or may not have watched a lot of documentaries about the Amish....so this is totally scripted and lame!
I have an obsession w/ the Amish. Well, maybe not an obsession per say, but I'm fascinated by their culture and lifestyle. I even wrote my 7th grade research paper on them.

I find them very fascinating as well! I had an Amish friend in elementary school!
I watched it when I was sick. Why is it fake? I don't doubt it but I have no idea. Just watched 2 episodes
The show portray's them as JUST breaking away from the Amish/Mennonite communities, when in reality most of them have been away for a couple of years if not longer.
In one of the first episodes, one of them even mentioned this being the first time they'd take a "real" shower that wasn't from a bucket.

This makes me sad, too!
I actually spent a day with the Amish this summer. My cousin works for/with them (she drives them to job sites, they work for her catering business) and she became close to one of hte families. They were SO gracious and allowed us into their lives for the day. We went to their local stores, saw their maple farm, went into their home/barn. They even gave us a buggy ride which isn't something they normally do. The older children let us photograph them, the parents declined. They were so kind and I'm just facscinated by them and their strong convictions, honestly. This show is really like the Real World of the Amish. I'm sure parts of it were staged, but I was hoping there was a bit more reality to it. I know there are Amish who wonder what the Western world is like (and we asked one of hte older children some of these questions and they confirmed) but I think they went over the top and staged it too much...which now sounds like the whole thing is fake other than these kids were raised Amish.
What really gave something away for me was when the chick was mad she was compared to Snooki. How the heck does she know who Snooki is and why that's a bad thing??

Shut the front door! I watch this show periodically and these things are blowing my mind.

i thought the amish older kids (teenagers/young adults) get to go see the western world for a couple of weeks to make sure they want to be Amish for the rest of their life. No?

They do...which is what I thought this show was based on. But it sounds like they've been in our culture for several years, not weeks.
