So H and I have finally joined the rest of the 21st century and will have our first iphones before the end of the day. I know we need to get cases for them, especially since we didn't pick up insurance on them (iphone4).
My phone gets juggled around in my purse. H is a cop so his will take even more of a beating.
We both have the Otterbox. DH has the Commuter, I have a Reflex. The Defender is the "you can beat the shit out of this phone and it will be fine" case, but it' shuge.
All the cases, though, are built to help protect the phone on some level. I've dropped my phone a few times and it's been fine.
They aren't the cutest of cases, but w/ an almost 4 year old, I went w/ function over looks!
I would look on Amazon- they have dozens and dozens of cases that have good reviews. Since you are getting the old iPhone, you'll see they are even cheaper.
Since your H wants a rough case, look for Otterbox. They are the industry standard in terms of protection (but add a lot of bulk to the phone).
The Otterbox is one of the most well known brands, but if you go to any store that carries cases you'll see a host of others that are generally cheaper. There are some knockoff Otterboxes in pretty much every place I've looked for a cover.
I just use one of the cheap cases that snaps on the back and a film over the screen so it doesn't get scratched. I've dropped it at home and stuff and it's fine, but I'll probably be screwed if the screen ever hits anything else. I never bothered protecting my old smart phones, so I don't much care about my Iphone either. They've all survived.
I have the Otterbox Commuter and it's held up OK. The plastic at the bottom of the phone (by the speakers/charger slot) have snapped off because I dropped the phone, but it doesn't make much of a difference.
My friend (also a policeman) has that giant Otterbox case and he likes it. It's definitely bulky, but it'd fit better in a man's pocket than a woman's.
Someone here mentioned a while back that Speck makes good cases, and I've seen them at Five Below. I'll probably buy one of those if I see one I like.
Someone here recommended the lifeproof case. I've been going back and forth on which one to get DH for his 5 that's coming soon. Lifeproof, otter box, griffin survivor...I've been reading reviews and it's just making the decision harder. He's not very careful.
I have a $25 Phillips case from Target on my 4 and its been fine, but I'm not hard on my phone. It's either in my purse or my hand.
I have an otterbox commuter, but I wouldn't recommend it. The bottom piece that goes into the charging plug won't stay in and the bottom rubber on the front is really thin, so it's stretched out now. I've barely had the phone a year.
DH has the lifeproof case for his 4 and I'm waiting for it to come out for the 5. It's basically everything proof- water, etc. He had an otterbox and it was pretty chunky and he ended up breaking the case or something. The lifeproof case is much slimmer and generally not as bulky. One downfall for the lifeproof 4 case is that you can't use a normal car charger with it- the way the bottom is sealed to be waterproof doesn't allow for anything but the wall charger to fit.
I have a friend that works for uncommon. They do personalized cases (and regular ones). But all our friends in that circle have their cases. They hold up VERY well from what I've seen.

[quote It has an overhang so the face of the phone doesn't hit the ground when I drop it. Which I do often.[/quote]
This is important. I've had several cases, they were all rubber with the overhang. I drop my phone a lot. After 2 years, I got a new, free 4 due to a software issue. I had the anti-glare film cover on the old one, not the new one and DH has never had it. He puts his phone in his pocket and if I put mine in my purse, I just face the screen towards the cloth lining. So far, no major scratches.
