The ceremony and cocktail hour are outside, at the couple's very large home. The ceremony starts at 4:30pm, then a typical cocktail hour and reception immediately follows. Reception is in their re-modeled barn.
The website specified "semi-formal garden party attire." I feel like George Costanza. Can I wear my usual little black dress that I typically wear to weddings?

I often wear black to weddings, but I probably wouldn't here. While it does match the "semi-formal" part of the description, it doesn't match the "garden party". I would probably go for a cocktail length dress in a jewel tone, and have a dressy wrap or something to put over your shoulders if it's cold.
Also - "garden party" for an evening fall wedding makes no sense.
thank you! that's exactly where I was going with this. I mean, for the ceremony part, sure, because it's outside at 4:30pm so it will still be full sunlight. But then the inside evening party with dancing and open bar ... not so much. And it's immediately following, at the same site.
Ok, I'm going to wear my LBD with a turquoise wrap thingy. Now I just need to figure out shoes. I'll be in the grass (probably wet because it's going to rain all day tomorrow, the day before) for half the event.
