It was totally user error that I couldn't figure out the neato last night. I didn't plug the other end of the plug into the unit. Ha. Anyway, I ran it last night and it's amazing. It kicks the roomba's ass.
Roomba- Good- quiet, virtual walls work well, good on regular carpet and hard floors, makes cute noises, dust bin is very easy to remove and empty, 1 battery charge does a pretty decent sized space (could do about 1000 sq ft before it died)
Bad- sometimes I had to run it twice to get the rug clean (doesn't clean a low pile burber type rug well and we don't' have any rugs with fringe, but I've heard it does terrible on that), very, very easy to operate (3 buttons), dies after a few years of regular use, gets stuck under low profile furniture and runs into it a lot (has bumper sensors), sometimes would clean the same spot 3 times, but miss other dirty spots completely, can't schedule cleanings (we had the 550 I think, but newer roomba models can do this now), unit was heavy
Neato- Good- Does a really good job at cleaning (I was amazed at how much dirt and hair it picked up. If I run this every night I'll probably only need to vacuum once a month.), didn't miss a spot, doesn't run into furniture (laser sensors), was able to pull itself out of the grooves in the sliding door, easy to use, the extra cord can be wound up and tucked in the charging station, fairly light to move Bad- kind of loud (it sounds like a jet engine turning on), didn't get the edges of the wall as well as I hoped
Overall, the pros of the neato outweigh the cons for me. I'm so thankful for Larz telling me about it because I probably wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. If I had to get another robot vacuum I'd get a neato for sure.
