That sucks. Especially with a new car. I had my car for a week and I hit a curb with the front corner and knocked the bumper off a little bit. I wanted to cry but it was pulling out of my ILs so I pretended it was no big deal
I was going to say that maybe he could keep his clean driving record and chalk it up to just a small ding, but it sounds like it's more serious than that...Hopefully he doesn't beat himself up too badly over this!

If it makes you/ him feel any better... A few years ago DH pulled his car into the office's parking garage and parked it at the top of the down ramp for the valet to park it. He got out and walked away until he heard a loud BOOM! He'd forgotten to put it in park and it rolled down the ramp unmanned and crashed into the wall at the bottom. We weren't married yet so I can't be sure, but I think it cost as much to fix the wall as the car!
That stinks!!! Hopefully it'll be fixed soon! If it makes you feel better, a few weeks ago I went to pull straight out if my garage, while reaching for something on the passenger seat. Turned the wheel to the right, too... Scraped the whole side of my car up- estimate was $4200!!! Thank god for insurance! Good luck.
I hate having a new car and having to get used to the way it drives, where your blind spots are, etc. When my car was brand new I hit the side view mirror on the side of the garage while backing out and broke it because I didn't realize how tight the space was. There is still a mark on the garage to shame me.
that sucks, but it totally could happen to anyone. I had a rental car for a trip this summer and felt really confident driving it, but it was still new to me and I ended up putting a long scratch down the entire driver's side when I was backing out of a spot.
