I am clueless on how these work and if, even it would fit my needs. But I saw a commercial for one of them (forgot which one) where it compared it to the ipad and the lady had two kids using them for reading, web browsing, and games.
If anyone has either, can you give me your opinion of pros and cons? I am looking to use this as a tablet mainly at home and then reading when away. It needs to have wifi capacity to use the router at home. Mostly web surfing - facebook, recipes, sewing tutorials, etc.. Thank you for any input

We bought a Kindle Fire for DD (she's 2.5) because by the time you buy the Leapster LeapPad and all the games, etc., you can buy a Kindle Fire
Pros: --It's pretty sturdy. L has dropped it quite a few times, and it's still pristine. --Good picture quality. --Dr Seuss books are available as an interactive app (it reads to you, you can press on the pictures or words, and it shows you what it's called, etc). L *loves* Mr Brown Can Moo. --You get a month of free Prime --Wi-Fi (wish it were 3G for roadtrips, but whatevs)
Cons: Not 3G. um....a charge doesn't last very long. We charge it every night.
All in all, we really like it. All three of us use it (DH usually watches movies in bed on it).
I do not really use mine to surf the internet (nook color). i have an iphone though so that's my main thing to use if I'm not on my laptop. I use my Nook to read books and magazines. Last summer I took in on vacation and used it to check the weather and email, that was pre-iphone. I used to play games on it too. I look forward to reading children's books on it in the future though.
DH just bought me a nook color last week so I don't have much experience. He mentioned that he wanted to get me a kindle (or maybe I mentioned that I wanted one because I thought I could read while nursing when the kiddo is born. The Kindle Fire was $199 and Target had an ad for a Nook color on sale for $169 and a $40 target GC (so basically $129). I did some quick research and realized that the Nook would be just fine for me. I really just want it to read and sometimes check my email (if I'm near wifi). I have an iphone as well, so I use that to surf the internet/check FB/etc. Our library has electronic books and it was really easy to figure out how to download a book to it. I'm still getting used to reading on it and not a book but for the price difference, I decided to go with the Nook Color over the Kindle Fire.

H has a kindle fire and I have a nook tablet. I wouldn't compare the nook color to the kindle fire -- too different IMO.
H likes that his kindle is more masculine looking, cases are easier to find, it's sturdier, more screen, amazon market (android based) w lots of free apps, he can root it, and he can use any micro usb charger.
My nook tablet is better because the screen is more responsive, it's more feminine, free wifi in B&N, there is a micro sd card and I can add storage, I can boot to an android rom from the sd, and it's not a kindle. (I'm anti kindle - this is my third generation of nook).
I don't have the kindle or the nook but I have both apps on my phone. It seems the price of books is always cheaper on the kindle app. They also have some free books with a prime membership.

I have a Nook color. I got it for Christmas and so far I've enjoyed it. I surf the web (I use the wireless at home just fine), read, play games (ok, just angry birds) and have had no problems.
