I'm just haaangin out, waaaaitin to O. Before BCP I had 28d cycles like clockwork, but that clock only ran for about a year before I went on BCP bec of the heavy bleeding and cramping. Off of BCP, my cycles went as follows: 31d, 30d, 28d, 29d. We were only TTC the last 2 of those cycles, but I decided to temp this cycle to see when I actually O. I figure I should O today if I haven't already assuming my LP is normalish length.
So here's my question.. do any of you ladies NOT see a temp shift at O? My cycles are not long enough to make me think they're anovulatory, but I'm curious if I'm waiting for a shift that might never really come. If you fall into this category and wouldn't mind sharing your chart, I'd send you virtual chocolate.
I believe that the temp shift happens after I O. I recommend giving OPK's a try and seeing if you can catch your fertile window. My O date has been a little unpredictable. It seems to happen any where between CD12 and CD17.
I got a temp shift around the time of O, but it didn't necessarily correlate exactly with my OPK results. For example, last month my temp started to rise on CD13, and finally reached its highest on CD16. My OPK showed positive on CD15....and technically, it should have been the other way around...you should get the positive OPK first, then see your temps rise. I think my temps may have just been a little wonky this month due to illness, but its hard to tell.
Do you use OPKs? I found it much easier to figure out when I actually ovulated using OPKs, mostly because my temps, though they showed a rise every month around the right time, were really inconsistent.
Also, when in doubt, hump it out!!! If you think you are about to O, and you probably are, then it's time to get busy:-)
I may give OPKs a try next cycle if I don't end up PG, but I think it's a little late for this go-round. I think my plan is to just keep having sex until I see a temp shift or AF, lol.

After you ovulate, your body produces progesterone, which is what raises your temp. You produce progesterone for several days (your luteral phase), then when it stops being produced, you get your period, and your temp drops. (This is from TCOYF.) So that is why temps go after ovulation- production of progesterone.
Temping will only tell you that you O'ed after you O - by seeing that temp shift. OPK's tell you that you are gearing up to O. It is nice to use them together for that reason- you get a heads up, then you can confirm ovulation.

This is what I remember from reading TCOYF as well. This is why temping can't be the the primary source of information. It's a combination of temp changes, CM and elevated LH levels that help you pinpoint your O day.
Yeah, I get the reasoning behind why and when the temp shift happens, but I know that it doesn't actually work that picture-perfect for everyone and was curious what those cases would look like on a chart.

What PP said, temp shifts can be slow but steady, or quick. It's all possible. But yeah, the temp does always go up after you ovulate, but there's not always a dip before.
Also, I think the 'average' LP is 11 to 16 days (aka, there's no such thing as average, but lower than 11 might give you trouble and longer than 16 days doesn't happen that often. Now ay of knowing how your cycle works until you've temped/charted a few cycles.
And yeah, OPK's are totally useful when you're still trying to figure out your cycle.
Temping hasn't been going that well for me because my existing kid is an asshole that won't let me sleep for 3-4 hours in a row lately.
I'm trying temping at a different time, but I'm still not sure it's going to work out for me. We're sleep training soon, and I bought a ton of OPKs to use this month.
So many things can affect your temp, so charts don't always show a clear temp shift. I am not sure if this is helpful - I never got a clear temp shift or positive OPK.
Ok, WTF. I was going to post one that showed a clear temp shift, but it keeps posting the same chart. Oh well!
