genuine curiosity, probably flammable.....those who vote off the beaten path, or a candidate who isn't favored in the state....due to the electoral system.....what's the point?

I'm voting Obama this year, but in 2008 I voted for Ralph Nader. I did so, because I was PISSED that Obama picked Joe Biden for VP. I HATE Biden, he's a fucking idiot and bugs me, I could go on, but that's the jist of it.
BUT this year I'm going for vote for the Democrats because I think both of the Republican candidates' religious standings are dangerous for our country, and imo they won't be able to keep religion separate from state matters. And I cannot support that in any way, so I'm sucking up my hatred for Biden this year. But, I do plan to caucus my ass off in 2016 to make sure Biden doesn't get the Democratic nomination.
I can't speak for anyone else, but for me personally, it was a very difficult decision. Fiscally, I am quite conservative. I believe that our tax policies are completely broken, I support a flat tax system, and I don't think Obama's presidency has been good for the economy. I also disagree strongly with his domestic policies.
That being said, socially I am much more liberal (hence the libertarian). I cannot stand Romney, his remarks and treatment of women, the Republican parties non-sensical attempts to control our bodies, and the notion that just because my friends are gay they are not allowed to get married like I am.
Every "which candidate do you match up to" quiz puts me with Johnson. I have historically voted Republican, but I can't in any conscious support Romney in office. With the added fact that our state is not a swing state (then I might feel differently), I decided to put my vote where my mouth is and support the Libertarian party officially.
mgoss, and eip...i understand the "making a point"....but wouldn't you rather pick the lesser of two evils, "just in case"? i guess with WA generally picking dems at a good enough margin, it's not an issue, but i'd be worried, i guess.

We just couldn't vote for Romney. But, we are fully aware that a vote any other way is basically a vote for Obama. If we lived somewhere else where it was a closer race, we might consider it differently. Does anyone really think that anyone except Obama has a chance to win this state?

This year I agree with staying safe "just in case," but I can see a lot of people not worrying about voting 3rd party because WA is SO Blue. According to Google searches, the last time WA's electoral votes went to a Republican candidate was in 1984 (Reagan vs Mondale).
I will also say that the gubernatorial race is different. I was not a Gregoire supporter and was disappointed to see her elected and will be voting McKenna but still would never support Romney.
