Anyone ever taken them? I've been really fearful at night lately, probably mostly due to things I've gone through with XH. I was thinking it would be empowering to take a self defense class, if for nothing else but my own peace of mind.
Anyone here ever taken one and, if so, what would you recommend?
I've taken a few and know how to break free from someone and how to break a nose pretty easily! Do I think I'd remember what to do in an emergency, I'm not sure, but it feels good to have a little knowledge!

That would be awesome to know how to break a nose!

It's really easy!!! And I also learned some really easy pressure points...and found out I don't have them, weird!

I took one in college and learned the same basic things that Doris mentioned. Like her, I have no idea how I'd react in a true emergency. I'd recommend it though. If nothing else, it'll probably make you feel a little more confident.
Oh, and the last one I went to was as freebee thing hosted by a local karate studio....they were trying to get people to sign up for classes, so offered the free class. Might want to look into that.

I know, I always worry that I would freeze up in the moment.
I think about how much more empowered I would've felt when I actually needed it. A couple of times after we split XH actually climbed through a window into the house. I woke up at 11pm to him tweaked out in front of the computer. That was definitely creepy. Luckily my mom was staying with me but still....it would've been nice to know I could bust his nose, if I needed to!
It's not just because of him that I get worried. I guess I'm just a big 'ol chicken about living alone.

I changed schools in junior high and was bullied a bit because this "popular" girl thought I was trying to steal her boyfriend. I actually was a mother's helper for his mom because she had twin babies and I wanted to earn my babysitting badge for Girl Scouts. But I was scared to walk home from school because she'd follow me. So my mom put me in self defense to make me feel more empowered. And it did. I liked that it was just a few private lessons with a local karate instructor, so I wasn't intimidated by anyone in the class. It was just me and him.
Never had to use the self defense though, which is good.
And the bully stopped when one of my friends got so worried about it she told the principal so we were both called in to the office to talk about what was going on. She actually felt bad that she didn't take the time to know what was going on and we walked home together that afternoon (and almost every afternoon after that).

I'm certified as a Basic Physical Defense for Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). It's definitely empowering, and I would recommend taking a program you are comfortable with. Whatever program you take, practice makes perfect.
I did in college. It's really informative. However, I won't take anymore, I met my ex there and refuse to go to another one. :-) I'll stick to a gun. haha!
